Cheap source of good lighting?

:razz:T-5 hype ? Are you saying T-8s are just as good or better than HO T-5s ?
I believe they are hyped up by sellers on ebay and hydro shops and the prices for flouro tubes are outrageous considering the numerous alternatives. I've seen a fixture with 6 bulbs sell for $250... that seems ridiculous to me for a flouro set up. But that is just my opinion. I do just fine with 65k cool white plus at $3 a bulb 40w.

$1200 covering a 4x4 area at 8" above canopy. I just don't see it. I do not believe that you are going to get good coverage.
Sorry mate, can't vouch for them or anything. I read some reviews about it and the pros seem to think it's all legit. Just throwing it out there for what it's worth. GL

I understand t-8s work just fine for you, and that's great. There our growers out there happy as hell growing from CFL's, but you can do better with T-5s and even better the new VHO T-5s. Bulbs for HO T-5s are 8$ a
piece. The price is high on certain designs. Just like reflectors.
I was using 3 600 mh in a 10x10 veg room. I tried 1 4' 4 bulb HO T-5 and I was sold after one week. I replaced all the MH with T5s

Respect~ I know there are those who will love them, but I just don't see how 8" above canopy is going to get the side's of 4-6 plants. I would think you would need a sog and then just directly under the light source is going to get good-great results.

Can you recommend any good read ups on them?

I use a 4 bulb 4 foot T5HO. Works fine but I think HPS would do better. Mine was like 125 from htgs??

I did notice home depot had very slim single 4 foot t5 in the lighting section. Was thinking about getting a couple of those to stick down into my grow. They were only about twice as round as the T5 bulb itself.

I have my 6 plants (and 6 clones) under 4 48" t12 Bulbs. 2 of each: GE 40w kitchen & bath (3400 lumens@3000k 70cri) and GE 40w Plant and Aquarium (1900 Lumens@3100k 90cri). I was thinking that I will flower with another ballast containing sunlight Fluoros or maybe buy a 150 watt HPS to use in conjunction with my current set up. I am trying to go economical, and yield weight is not as important as cost and potency. I just want a perpetual harvest of meds that I can use and trade with my coop partners.

Here are some pics of my indoor setup (which is actually in a mini greenhouse)

As I said, my costs are the main concern. Please let me know if I am on the right track. I am not looking to be a professional cannabis gardener. Just to grow some good quality meds.

Also, would someone enlighten me as to whether it might be a good idea to bring the t12 bulbs back to Walmart and get some t8s?

6. Conclusion

The “bottom line” is that T5 is superior to T8 in that it creates more usable light.
If the goal is to have the best of the best, then by all means go T5, but I stand my ground and say that the hydro and grow industries have hyped it up so bad that the prices are ridiculous. Look at the differences in efficiency from the T12 compared to the 5 and 8, there isn't much difference. In the color scale it's better as well, but not by a margin that justifies it's exaggerated costs. That is all I was saying.

I'm happy with my T8's :) My plants veg just fine for the first 2 weeks, then they go under LEDs anyways. :)

I agree that T5's are waaaaay over-hyped. As I said before, for the price of (2) T5's you can purchase about 6 or so T8's.... and the T5's are only 20% more efficient than T8's.

I disagree about T12's though. Completely useless piece of junk compared to T8 or T5

Hey that's great, whatever it takes to achieve a harvest. But you can't say that T-8s are comparable to HO T-5s.

T-8 256W ( 8 -32W) = 2500 lumens per bulb ,63 lumens per watt CRI 75-85

T-5 216W 4ft. (4 -54W) T5HO bulbs = 5000 lumens per bulb , 92.6 lumens per watt CRI 85 (1-400 watt MH 65-92)

HO T-5s Generates 1-2X the light output than standard T8s & T12s.
So one T5HO bulb can be used in place of two T8 or T12 bulbs. :joint:
