I agree with Amrock. I started indoors myself in soil, I've started doing outdoors now too. It's quite overwhelming even in soil for the first time, you've got to work out when your plants need watering. You can get into a set pattern, but each plant has it owns needs and you need to make sure you're working off what the plant wants. My plants have suffered nute burns a few times when I've screwed up too. I've learnt lots of lessons from soil.
If you're set on going hydro, go for it, but it's best to get the basics sorted first.
