How do I keep my dark area dark, and have my plants still breathe?

Ok I have a closet grow, I've got 2 purps and Im adding 2 more clones in a week. I've got a 400 watt hps burning and im on 12/12, I've used make shift blockers to block out all light. I sktech out that it isn't good enough, is it ok for even a tiny bit of light to get in, or is it going to hermie up if thats the case? and how if the closet is sealed, do the plants still get air? I am unable to break a hole and use an in and out fan that way, so how does that all work? can some please give some advice for a closet grower! thx

You have to have some form of ventilation. The plants need air movement to stimulate thick stems, or they will be weak and fall over. You also need the ventilation to help with heat and humidity issues.
The plants will not do well without air circulation.

I have ventilation when the light is on, and there are cracks in the closet which I have to cover up with a dark proof curtain, is that enough ventilation? when the light is on I keep the closet open with fans running and my room door and window are periodically let open so they have ventilation while the light is on. do you think its enough to use the cracks that Im covering up as ventilation holes??

Ok, I misunderstood on your ventilation. You open during lights on and close during lights off. You said you have fans inside running or outside blowing in? It sounds like your grow space is not 100% sealed for air. I "think" if you still have a small fan running inside during lights out it will move enough air around inside and also pull/push through any cracks. I do not think your setup is sealed enough to where the plants would have oxygen/CO2 issues when closed during lights out. I would make sure you have a fan or an oscillating fan in side running at all times.

Good luck on the grow.

perfect! thats exactly what I wanted to hear, I will be sure to keep the fan in and monitor to make sure there are no ventilation issues. thx man

yea bro i did the same thing you did with the cracks in the doors covered by a thick dark curtain to ensure light was not getting through. Ended up with some nice looking girls and got 2 seeds out of harvest :leaf:

You can not do a successful grow without a fan blowing 24/7.

SCILATING FANS

An oscilating fan is a necessity to me, in growing.
First it cools the area. Consider in nature, outdoors, plants get breezes and strong winds blown on them, for a reason.
Second, you know how to strenghten a muscle, or make it larger, or stronger or grow faster? You exercise it, you MOVE it.
To strenghten a plants stem, stalk or branch, or make it larger, or stronger or grow faster, you MOVE it too, with an oscilating FAN blowing on it.

Fans help with Temps, Humidity Control, Moisture Control, etc.

Air movement is very necessary for the health of your plants, but too strong of a fan can cause wind burn. Direct your fan toward the tops of the plants and toward the lights. Never position the fan blowing strongly downward on the leaves or you can get wind burn.
