Hello all,
So I have a scientific question. I recently had a buddy run 24/0 and after having a good look at his plants I decided I'd never run 24/0 in my life.
Why?
His plants look sad. The leaves are green but droopy, the nodes are a little too tight blocking light penetration, it's like it tried to grow and grow but ended up stacking on top of itself way to much. He's now going through a hell of a stretch period and IMO should defoliate to get maximum light penetration.
There is no doubt that Marijuana can use 24 hours of light as it is a C3 plant but it's also a short-day plant which would lead me to believe it should be under less then 18 hours a day for great growth. There should be SOME stretching to create maximum penetration and ideal budding spots.
What some people also don't seem to understand is that with the lights on marijuana intakes CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) and exhales oxygen. During the night cycle this is reversed, oxygen is taken in and CO2 is expelled. This creates a great environment for the next time the lights are on and I suspect is why plants under shorter lighting cycles then 24/0 don't tend to droop as much or stretch as much.
For this reason I've found the Gas Lantern Routine (Or 12 on 5.5 off 1 on and 5.5 off) to be extremely interesting. Users report NO stretch through when switching to flower because the plant has already acclimated itself to building up these flowering hormones and has stretched over night. Stretch is not a bad thing (unless height limitations are reached) as it allows maximum light penetration through what would be a thick canopy.
Users also report bushier plants and faster flowering using GLR.
During the night cycle of 12 hours Marijuana's flowering hormones hit a maximum and tell the plant to flower. The 1 hour break in between breaks up the flowering hormones. This can be done with CFLs, T5s or your HID. These hormones are broken down in the first ten minutes but the hour (Some users do two) is for that extra security.
Not all strains respond accordingly though and some do flower but most have unstable genetics to begin with. Sativas generally prefer this method versus Indica who seem to like the longer day schedules.
Any thoughts? I'm starting to believe that maybe 16/8 would even be better then 18/6. Yes cannabis doesn't NEED a dark period but the CO2 generation is a great reason alone to give them that dark period.
