hps in a small room

I have a room that is about 4X3X5 and right now I have a cfl setup with a 100 cfm bathroom vent fan venting the room. my question is would I be able to run a 400watt hps setup in there without running into heat problems? that is really the only reason I am going with cfls right now. the fear of burning down my house when I am at work.

No, I got two 150 hps...= 300 watts... I'm in a room the same size, although only 6 sq ft is dedicated to the grow... you have 12+ sq ft......My closet is an outside storage room off of my apt patio....
The first night the ambient temeratures outside were in the 70's....the two lights were on for two hours and I read a temp of 92* @ 40% humidity.....inside the room. NOT acceptable!!!
The last two nights it's been in the lower 50's, and today the outside temps were in the upper 40's......I went to holiday dinner~ worried off my ass that I'd come home to cinders and police lights...but checked the room, and it was at a respectable 85*........
Now, My room wasnt vented...but those two days worth of data should tell you something!!! Those lights GET HOT.....FAST........I'm still working on how I'm gonna vent/cool them with out screwing up my deposit on the apt!!! Only thing I can think of, and I've asked it here on a few other posts...is ...just cutting a hole in the ceiling and venting!!@! anyways..youre talking about an extra 100 watts...........is your room inside? I'm sure it is....you will need "proper" (megga) ventilation.........r u gonna buy this lamp, or do u have it now? If ya got it...use it, plug it in, and use a temp meter...every 15 minutes......and vent/add fans accordingly!!! BEFORE YoU GERMINATE!!!!! Get yer temps right......we are all "Practicing" horticulture here.....no one person has a doctorate!!! Good luck!!!!

I have almost the same exact sized room, and am running a 400 W HPS at first with only a 70CFM fan, and I had only alittle heat problem, than I bought another and had no problems after that. I have since upgraded but with a 100 CFM, your temps should be ok.
I also had a tower fan for circualtion.
and no wories about burning down your house, new well built HPS ballasts and lights are very safe. and will shut down if somthing goes wrong with the electronics if its a digital balast.

it also really depends where you live and the climate....i have the same size room and have a 400 watt hps bulb directly 10 inches on top of my plants, with just a fan blowing on them, and a small bathroom exhaust fan for the whole room....

Before I moved my cabinet in the garage I was kicking out temperatures ranging from 70-90degrees with a 400watter and crappy a crappy exhaust fan.

Room temperature is the key to it all because now that my cabinet is in the garage I can barely keep the temperature inside the cabinet above 70 and the garage is around 50 I'm guessing (I haven't checked).

So yeah, you definitely should be able to run a 400Watter in the space you have.

What if you dont have a digital ballast???? Will it just blow a circuit breaker???
I'm SOOOOOOOO curious here...! I'm cool with a blown circuit.....but not with a charred grow room...........
We/I am talking about theese little 75/100/150 watt security lamps......ok I am talking/asking.....??

Puppies should sprout in the next 24 hrs, and I need to go to work, someday.....24/7 ? 2 150's should the circuit blow, before a fire???
ewe im gettin nervous.............

yes, they are both saying goodnes, it is true now that it is getting fucking freezing I shut off all exaust fans during the night and run only one of the 70CFM PC fans, even though I could use the extra heat, but... if the plants need air they need it. and heroine too... but thats for another thread

running a floodlight is more unsafe than running a light made for growing. HighTechGardening has a 400W HPS. its not a digital ballast, its the same light I use, and its only 130 USD including shiping, and it gets to your house in 4 days guaranteed I believe. theres a link to the light in my signature it kicks ass and is afordable on a bums bugget... magnetic ballasts are pretty damn safe too, there are almost no fires started by good quality grow lights. as an added precaustion people are advised to put them on a power strip with a surge protector.

Don't let the hot reflector or lamp get too close to wood paper etc.

There are fire extingushers made that go off when it get too hot. I've thought that it would be a good insurance policy for a grow room.
