Lowering Flowering to 8-10 hours to mature quicker?

This is my first grow so I'm still learning. So what I got going on is a Purple Kush and a Blue dream in the second week of flowering. They are 30-32 inches tall and looking pretty healthy. For me I'm all about speed, I'm trying to able to harvest by the end of this month (4 more weeks so 6 weeks of flower total). This website says that I can lower the light cycle to 8-10 hours of light instead of 12/12 to make the plants mature much faster. http://www.a1b2c3.com/drugs/mjgrow4a.htm Just curious will that work?

I have never tried it so I don't really know. I did go and read the link, are you really willing to limit the yield on your first grow to end a week or two early? Be patient my friend and you will be rewarded in the end. That's my take on it anyhow.

Sorry, no it wont. It will only hurt, once the flowering hormone level reaches the threshhold needed to induce flowering adding more by increasing dark times does not make it flower any faster or anything like that, it just gives it less energy to grow with than if it was getting a full 12 hrs of light.

i have a book infront of me from ed rosenthal himself and he actually clarifys that u will loose alot of yeild by doing this.

A loss in yeild is ok to me. Basically I live in CA and AZ this year I'm in CA for the summer until I go back to school in AZ in early August so thats why Im looking for speed. So if I've got it right lowering the light will not speed up the grow only hurt it's development and yield?

are you really going to harvest that early? if you really like purple kush you are going to be pissed at what you get pulling it that early. if you really only care about speed i would let it grow longer and direct the impatience at a shorter dry/cure time. either way the bud will taste like shit but at least the more mature bud will be more potent. i still strongly advise against this.

I totally agree, after going through all this effort and $ to do this project I might as well wait the extra time and make all my hard work worth it. Thanks for the advice everyone!

Just want to state that I have seen this done by a very dear friend and I can say that it is a MYTH. ALL of his plants, using some really stable and stellar genetics, shit the bed worse than any case I have ever saw. I have seen plants get beat up pretty bad from all sorts of things, but nothing will hurt/kill your girls quiker than going from 12/12 to only 8-10 hours of lights. HOWEVER what works for me, or what I have atested to may not always be the same in your case. Good Luck and I hope I was able to be insightful. FIRE IN DAHOLE! Peace, Love and Happiness.

I started lowering my lighting schedule by 30 minutes every week at week 5. Along with dropping temps by 2 degrees every week. My blue dream was fully ripe at 9 weeks. This run I let it go a full 12/12 with no drop in temps. Its looking to be ready in a few days at the end of week 10. The harvast also looks like its gonna be a lot bigger just from the nug size and density I got this time. Its worth just waiting for the plant to mature when its ready, then to force it to mature faster. It will lower your yeilds.

I agree. Don't try and reinvent the wheel, so to speak, and learn to develop the patience that only time and experience and huge harvests will provide... I'd stick with the 12/12 light cycle, and never waver from that path... your plants will just take time to flower and mature... There's no magical combination of light/darkness that will ever give you better results other than the one we all go by, 12 on, and 12 off... Try focusing your nervous newbie energy on things like LST, and FIMing, and supercropping, as well as things like lighting, and ventilation, and adding a CO2 generator, to ensure big yields off of your two plant set up... That's my opinion...

I hate it when that grow a ton of weed tell noobs to be more patient with their first grow, when whats really killing them is the hundreds they are spending on sacks in the process haha. patience on the second grow when you have weed to spare.

but in this case, dropping to 10 hours didnt help me... i switched at like week 8 and the plants still didn't mature til week 12 or 13. cant tell if it sped up or not. and yes i have an ed book that says the same thing.

I have heard DJ short himself advocate while speaking at events that a 13 dark 11 light gives tighter nugs and more idiosyncratic pheno expression during light dep. Scott from Rare dankness said he tried it and change to using it that method at the cup talk I listened to. anyone else familiar? also heard of dropping down to 15-16 hours of light for few days in veg then back up to 18+ for few then dropping temps and light to 11hrs kinda pumping them up to flower I guess? I have only heard of this never seen it done. I do run 11.5 light and 12.5 dark on mine it seems to tighten them up a bit unless it is my imagination. anyone have thoughts?

If your looking for faster harvest grow auto flowers you can leave lights on 24/7. I usually run 18/6 and average 90 +/- days seed to jar

The fastest auto I've grown was 90 days. If that's your average you're probably pulling them early. Just an FYI.

Also the original post was made 11 years ago. It's best to stick to new content as the people you're trying to help aren't in around anymore.

Oh that's cool didn't know it was that old haven't been on here for a while yeah that 90 days plus or minus I usually run them till the leaves turn brown or in your red whatever color they want to turn in that strain. I just use 90 day as a guideline rather than 5 months outdoors
