Nirvana Gelato DIY RDWC SCRoG

Long time lurker, first time journaler. Haven't done a grow for 5 years so thought I'd throw up a journal for anybody else doing similar stuff to learn from my mistakes (and hopefully get some tips from the pros!). Normally I run 2 x 400w HPS in a top fed recirc system. So LEDs and RDWC will be a new challenge.

As the title says, I've got 2x Nirvana Gelato (feminized) that I'm trying to SCRoG in a RDWC system I pieced together. It's a bit different to most RDWCs I've seen here, as the water fills from the bottom of the pot and drains through a centre pipe with a drain fitting on top:

First lesson learned - 19mm pipe for the drain was too small. I used it for most of veg but it was a bitch to get the flow rate right so that it would fill both pots equally and not overflow (pumping more in than the drain could take out). Moved to 32mm fittings and it works a treat. Wasn't sure how this design would go for roots clogging up the drain but they survived veg with decent enough root systems after 4 weeks from seed:

This approach does have a couple of benefits though - middle of the root ball is getting heaps of air, have had issues with big clumps in the middle before going bad. Also creates a waterfall effect to oxygenate the res as the water falls down the pipe and gravity feeds/burps back into the res. I've got some air stones in each pot but this is a decent half-ass backup if an air pump goes on me.

Vegged them for a couple of weeks under a HLG100 4000K but quickly ran out of space under the garage bench. Plan was to get them started there and then move to the flower room but (un?)fortunately their growth exceeded my build time. Topped them at the 5th set and did some minimal LST to spread them out a bit

IMG_8161.jpeg

They were getting pummelled by that HLG at about 700 umol with no headspace to move the light, so I had to act before they started frying up. I had an old 3 x 3 tent laying around so I'll finish them in there to get a feel for how this strain stretches and can do the flower room properly. If anybody has experience with similar looking gelato phenos, would love to hear from you! Nirvana says this strain packs tight nodes and smashing them with that much light no doubt contributed to it growing like a head of lettuce instead of the devil's lettuce :)

They are in the tent now, shoddy emergency SCRoG deployed and flipped to flower 2 nights ago:

I'll probably try and rebuild the net tonight before things get too hectic. Bought a dehumidifier in my rush and figure it'll fit under the net if I give it another inch of height. The net only has two legs and I'm using the dehuey as support for the other side. That is going to end in tears real quick from emptying the dehuey plus I'd like the extra 6" x 36" of net in case these stretch their legs. I picked up two Migro Aray 3's for the flower room but I'm only using one for this tent run:

After some (quick) research, these seemed like a decent LED option. My flower room is very height constrained - usually have some growth around the sides of the cool tubes on the 400s :wall: These can run optimally in flower at 6-8" from the canopy with much more even distribution. At 16" in veg they pump pretty hard (750-800 umol) so we'll see how that works out.

Any constructive feedback welcomed and I'll try keep this updated as I try/fail to finish these off.

Dose of Epsom salts seems to have already helped the mag deficiency after a day

Been trying to figure out how to get temps up under these LEDs. Turned the minimum fan speed to zero and set the temp to 30 degrees Celsius. Sits nicely now around 29 degrees Celsius at 50% humidity with leaf temps around 24.5 Celsius. That seems to be a decent spot for vpd at late veg/early flower (1.07 kPa)

Exhaust only kicks on every half hour or so now. Hopefully that is enough fresh air for them. Probably won't be able to get away with it much longer as the smell increases. Weather should hopefully start to warm up a bit by then

Looking good so far! Plants are dense bushes. It will be nice to see how these lights work out for you.
Yeah I haven't tried a SCRoG with anything so short and bushy before. Hoping they keep spreading out a bit over the next couple of weeks but this is just a test to see before I have a real go in the flower room. Wouldn't think I'd been ripping handfuls of leaves off them for weeks. But I'll give them a proper defol and lollipop in week 3

So far the readings are on par with the charts by the manufacturer (pardon the pun). I'm running them about 40cm from the canopy for a pretty even 750ish through the whole tent. Pretty happy with them - nice long cable to place the driver outside the tent, good even coverage, runs nice and cool. Too cool for winter to be honest but much less stressed about a fan dying and burning the house down like I was with the 2 x 400s in cool tubes in a very small space.

Still blows my mind how quickly they recover. The one at the back got a heap of defol and training under the net.

Already back up in 4 hours

I’ve always grown from seed but decided to try take some clones for mothers this time. picked up one of those little clone boxes with the jet nozzles. I snapped a piece off a week ago by accident and it’s popped roots already. Didn’t cut it at the correct location or use cloning gel. Just 1m/L of regen-a-root (Root stimulator) in the res and whatever snapped off the plant. Hopefully the “proper” clones I took a few days back root as easily

Still just tucking and weaving. At least they are finally stretching an inch or so a day now. Was hard at the start to spread them out with such tight nodes. Been 10 days since 12/12, so hopefully only another week or so of stretch

Went away for a few days and left the wife in charge. She didn’t kill them, so that’s a bonus. Got a lot of work to defol and spread them out today. Came home to the start of some flowering though

Did some defol last night. Will try finish it off tonight and tomorrow. Ph sitting at 5.8, EC 1.6. Lights been sitting 7-8” above for a few days at 100% and they seem happy enough. PPFD is about 950.

Thinned out a bit more of the canopy from this

Still more to defol but learned another lesson - even a 3x3 is tricky to access the back with a low scrog. Much prefer my usual 1 plant deep flower room. Seems like I should be able to squeeze 4 of them in the 2 x 6.
