hey guys i was wondering if i can have a mh/hps lamp running on a power converter..?
I was at a hardware store getting ready for sandy, and i seen a power converter that powers up by a car battery.
I was thinking if i can run a cord from the wall, to power up the converter and hook it up to a homemade hps/mh lamp.
The converter says something like this 1000/ 3000 watts. 12vc/120ac or something like that. I was planning to run a 400watt hps. My other question is if i was to run the 400 wts will the electrical company suspect anything or is it a common usage in house holds. Please guy ill aprecciate any suggestions.

ill try posting a picture of the converter in a bit..

That looks like a dc to ac convertor. If you are not sure, don't do it. Electricity burns houses down every day. It won't make exceptions.

It would work, if the converter provides enough for the ballast to fire up the bulb.
You really want leisure batteries, not car batteries.
Probaby around 20 of them to get through a light cycle.
Then you need some way of charging them. (presumably off the mains)
So all-in-all, pointless unless you are plannig on using solar or wind power to charge the batteries.

No the elictric company can not tell that your running a 400w light. It would take far more electric usage to be noticed. Look at the wattage of all your other household appliances. A coffee pot is 800 watts and they dont care anyway as long as you pay your bill. Nott so long ago i had the same concerns and now i run 2400 watts and im not worried at all.
