Remove skewer from Cannagar core

I'm trying to roll my own cannagars and am having a hell of a time. I pack my cores into the mold, remove them the next day, roll it up with some fan leaves off my plants and use some distillate as my glue. I insert it into a wood tip and wrap it in some string and let it cure for a week or two. I unwrap the string and everything looks perfect! But then I try to remove the wood skewer to smoke it and it won't budge. I try twisting it with pliers, but end up snapping the end off. Does anyone have any tips?

Maybe wrap the skewer in a small piece of parchment paper before packing the core.
