Rust? Or deficiencies?

With 300 PPM tap you shouldn't have any need for added calcium, may have too much calcium. Perhaps a RO filter is in your future?
Ha! I've been kicking myself for selling the RO that I had for my former reef tank. Oh well.

The initial deficiencies were showing mostly as cal/mag. Once I started adding that in they flourished... Like a switch got turned on.
 
I'm not shutting down any further conversation about this by any stretch... But thanks everybody. I really appreciate the experienced opinions.

Well you may have had enough calcium but not enough magnesium... could try adding epsom instead of calmag.

Good point. If I remember correctly though (I didn't document this), the leaves were showing a need for both. Could be wrong.
Another reason to get the tap water tested. With that much overhead PPM we really need to know what it is, or just filter it all out and start fresh with a clean slate.
 
Yeah dead sugar leaves could definitely be bud rot that's the only way to tell without cracking the bud open
Well... I sure hope that's not the case. Would it make sense that the affected buds are the ones that are most exposed and have the best air circulation though?

Doesn't look like bud rot to me but you can bend the bud open a little and look inside.

Ca in tap water isn't always available to the plant. It's from the water plant running the water through calcium carbonate (limestone) to buffer the pH. The particles in tap are usually way too big for plant to use. My tap is also around 300 ppm and I have to add Ca-Mg or they get deficient.

Well... 10ish Gallons of fresh flush water (lost count... Busy day) and the waste ppm are down to ~500 (tap water is 220 today). Fed her at 1000ppm, 6.2ph. Top dressed with 2 table spoons of dolomite. Unfortunately I got confused and dumped the waste water before testing it, but I'm sure it'll be just a little over that 1000ppm mark.

I put a nute solution in the auto water at 6.3ph, and 850ppm.

Fingers are now crossed that I come back to no more damage and big ol donkey buds!

From any of that I can find of bud rot it looks like the insides start going brown and crappy looking. If everything is nice and green inside I should be good, yeah?
Yeah should be good but it may just be starting I would keep an eye on it. In any case unhealthy plants are more prone to issues so keep a close eye

Easier said than done with me being out of town for a week.... But I hear you.

I've done all that I can do for now. Including my crossed fingers.
