Winners

Is there a site that catalogs notable cannabis competition winners and top 3 finishers (not just Cannabis Cup) around the world, or throughout the US/NA?

It would help select breeders and strains. Anything I add now would have to be pretty special. Plus, it would probably be a good way to learn about what's going on, where.

Winners would be good, but sometimes there's probably a high-yielding 2nd or 3rd place finisher that's interesting.

Thanks

I can't think of any single site that has Cup winners in one place; more specifically, you'd have to look up Cannabis cups & expos, & see what their winners were.

If it's not the clone only then it's a crap shoot if you're working seeds & expecting what the cup winner did. Who knows though might find something better than their pheno.

The actual judging process varies depending on the typical rituals of each judge, but for me, as a joint guy, it’s pretty standard:

  1. Crack open an entry and huff those beautiful fumes for a few minutes, get thoroughly acquainted with the aroma. I personally am turned on by unique terp profiles, but it’s hard to beat some good gas.
  2. Report Aroma Findings.
  3. Spend the next few minutes admiring the look and feel of the bud – is it trimmed well? How dense is it? Does it look like top-shelf? (Remember, this IS the battle of the buds, after all)
  4. Report Look & Feel Findings.
  5. Next, I’ll grind up the entry and fashion it into a J. After it’s rolled up I’ll dry toke it a few times to get a flavor idea. Once I’m satisfied there, spark up.
  6. Report Burnability Findings.
  7. Enjoy the buzz, and after a few minutes start to think: Do I feel particularly sedated/stimulated? Does this feel better/worse than normal? Anything different about this feeling?
  8. Report Effects Findings.
  9. Now, this is my favorite part: detail your thoughts. Obviously you’ll be a bit more excitable than normal, but do your best to jot down as expansive notes as possible for the producers of this product. Sing its praises, let them know what you think could have been better, or simply let them know you thought it was standard, but this is an opportunity for you, the consumer, to impact the products you see on the shelves. If you’ve got a great idea for how a brand can stand out, here’s your opp to tell that idea directly to the creators of the product.
  10. Repeat as necessary.

Knowing that getting through an ounce of product will take time for the general consumer, HT has established the maximum judging period of 30 days for the upcoming People’s Choice competitions.

I hear ya. If it's interesting/promising/adds value to my variety pack zips, I'd take the best of whatever 6-12 seeds get me. I enjoy getting a purple and a red pheno (e.g. Rocky Mtn Strawberries), and appreciate the end product more if I'm the one that worked through rounds of exclusions. But yeah, if clones were available where I am I'd include them.

I'm just surprised there isn't a paid service yet ... also helps to not recreate what's available. If I have some downtime, I might organize at least some links to different state competitions to follow for my own research..

not sure cannabis cup winning is an actual indication of good genetics. some of those are rigged. some have people submit one item and sell something completely different from seed. the same strain might win best sativa, indica and hybrid across different cups or years. people enter the same strain too. that is all confounding to use it as an indicator of something great.

True, no single opinion or data point is dispositive. I've worked through quite a few strains, and I currently have quite a few strains. I was just thinking this pursuit would generate leads/candidates for future acquisitions. I see how strains/breeders are promoted ... I don't rely at all on leafly or a lot of online rankings. Idk, I'm looking for convenient leads with some merit/quality validation, particularly strains I wouldn't have thought of.

I only pay attention to grower cups like the Oregon Cup. The Hightimes cups are based off votes. The more sample you bring the more votes you can acquire, you could have the best bud and just not enough for everyone to try. That skinny white dude from jungle boys has a pretty good podcast on the subject.
