I have a feeling it will become clear and a better market soon, once a few companies have a nice cob light out. I really can't believe its taking so long...amazing given the need
It probably has to do with warranties. When you DIY, a failure in a year is an opportunity to do the latest thing. When you sell with a 3-year warranty it's an existential threat.

The average LED buyer isn't that discriminating. Many are taken in by pretty web pages and outrageous claims. If a typical seller upgraded to COB they'd be incurring a risk (unproven reliability) their competition hasn't, only to sell to a very small discriminating segment of the market.

It's the "Crossing the Chasm" syndrome. The bell curve between early adopters of a technology and mass market.

DIY will alway be cheaper because of no over head.
Is the question here really why are companies making a profit??? That is the way the world works people. And usually at a standard 100% markup...which we don't see anywhere close to that form a top performing LED company like a51...or AT even(I know their cost and they barely make 40% mark up at their ridiculous full 2499 retail...and anyone here can get them for $2K. And I expect a51 to be not much different.

What do you want a company to do???...build and supply all the parts for the best light available...build it to perfect factory built specs...also give the best warranty and a service/support behind it...and then only charge you the component cost???

Very true. I just had a friend tell me how his kids were asking about the strange light. I'm building him a light right now so he can throw that thing away. At cost, no profit...maybe if he wanted a bunch it'd be another story..lol

I gave him a spectra i had sitting around. Worked when i turned it off, year later and a bank of leds are out. His grow shop led he already had lasted 1 month before leds went out.
I had some burn out after 15 months

I'm still waiting for them to send me the replacement diodes. They're sending me extra lol I wonder why?

Hell yeah! Doesn't everyone? I rarely take into consideration the company's best interests. lol!

The Optic Vero looks pretty tempting at $500 for the 200 watt model. They look WEIRD, too! I kinda like it! Hmmm….

You could always play it safe and wait until the summer; I imagine there will be a company or two to emerge with COB-emphasized fixtures, that boasts better user-functionality and cosmetics.

Has anyone ever told you that you are wiser than most, AZ?

I think of this 'chasm' as a game of Risk. It's like Monopoly and war twixed together. Mmm, Twix.

Basically, in order to win, in my experience, one has to earn and save up as many bonus soldier/unit cards as possible before unleashing one single, large army, which typically wins the game if no one else playing utilizes the same strategy.

In the case of the COB-fixture market, the one who binds as much needed time as possible will most likely come out on top, remaining as a staple for future buyers, much like how A51 has done.

How many rabbitholes can you handle?

They are all from now and they are all great. Most of the good resource management games are made by germans. I am from the land of the free, home of the brave.
I'm not really from this time or place... I'm really just a big, fat, blue alien that likes to pretend to be a human being.

I'm serious.

Why don't I see more of you on here? 160 messages? Come on, you can do better! ;-)

edit: Sometimes my messages can be taken differently. I'm implying that I'd like to see more of you here in the LED section, as I've enjoyed your personality today and trivial tidbits about music history.

Ok whats up with onyx? Does the unit inself get hotter than constant cooling? I mean, It gets to the point for fan kick on then cooldown! are these boards built to withstand hot, cold, hot, cold? Just checkin?

How much is too much? I am thinking of doing a 48" long heatsink with 12 CXB3070. Total cost with drivers will be about $930 for the project but will provide 600w of LED. This should compete with my 1000w in my area (2'x5'). Im pretty sure I am tapped out on the yield for the size of my area (just hit .6g per watt in 10 sq ft on a 1000w).

Would 600w of CXB3070 power be too much? Im thinking it should be about perfect. If I yield 1g/w, itll be equivalent to my 1k HPS. I would save about $20/month in cost + savings from not having to cool. Not a huge difference but if I can yield as well if not better, it should be a good choice.

Hey guys, I bought 2 LED flood light style bulbs with the following specs; 54W (18x3W) - Red 1 630nm x6 - Red 2 660 x5 - Blue 465nm x2 - Royal Blue 450nm x2 - Deep Blue 430nm x1 - White 14000K x1 - Orange 610nm x1 - So each bulb has what is listed. With a lux meter in the main focal of both bulbs i get roughly 32000lux in a 4,5 sq. ft. space. Think these will do a good job??
