How do you lay out the holes on the heatsink, are you just putting the Ideal holder on the sink and using a punch? I have the Ideal holder and the adaptor to put on, so 4 holes in each to tap. Any suggestions on how to simplify the layout process?

Using ideal holders and prolimatech I had no problem. Pre drilled and tapped HS. Used a plastic card to apply very thin layer of paste onto chip and mounted with the rec. 5lbs of pressure. Like the op stated, The vacuum created by the paste and cob is very strong. I would use this method again for sure.

PS jerry at kingbrite has the holders and cleaned too.

I used a felt pen to mark the centers of where i wanted my cobs, thenI took and ideal holder placed it centered on my marks and marked where the holes will be. After drilling and tapping entire sink I cleaned it with stiff brush and soap and water. Let it dry for 48 hours and cleaned the mounting surface with 99% Isopropol alcohol. Make sure to drill holes for wires, lenses too.

Plenty of lube
When you meet resistance with the tap, back out half turn, more lube. Continue

I have not been able to find a distributor for small quantity of these holders yet but I do have 12 samples to try with my first build when I get around to it. They have US distribution but just can't find them on the retail market. You can get them direct from them but I believe MOQ is 500 pieces

@CanadianONE Thank you so much for this post. After finishing my build, the ugliest part is the ideal cob holder with their bullshit reflector adapter. Its a flimsy piece of plastic that req 2 additional holes to be drilled and tapped perfectly or it wont line up. then you have to break out 1 of 6 numbered tabs without ripping the others out. FUCK YOU Ideal. you are one of the biggest electronic tools and parts manufacturers and this is the best you can come up with?

Those holders also work with the ledil Angela & Angelina reflectors. Have push in wire terminals to accept 0.5mm (20awg) stranded (tinned) or solid wire

Use and over sized drill hole. Similar size to what is recommended for self tapping screws.

Ex
Try a #40 drill bit with a 4-40 tap instead of a #43. There will still be plenty of thread strength and it will save you a tremendous amount of time, effort, and taps. I promise.

WD40 for lube works great.

What type of tap, bottom plug or taper do you recommend? Also M3 #4 or #5 is recommended on the Ideal spec sheet, is the 4-40 of similar size and why do recommend that over the M3?

Spiral flute bottoming tap....I recommend what is in the spec sheet, 4-40 is the American equiv. of M3 or within thousandths....but maybe GG is onto something.....I find proper mounting in a press, has never given me trouble, drilling by hand though, going small like they suggested seems to be practical advice.... :peace:

Has anyone used the Vero 29 holders from Ledil?

I ordered a couple C13584_CLAMP-Vero29 and a couple reflectors F13839_ANGELINA-XW-B which the C13584 datasheet clearly shows working with the holder.

The arrive and are not compatible. The reflector has 2 small mounting tabs and 3 slots. The tabs are in the way of the slots reaching the holder. I could break the tabs off, but the slots are smaller than the arms on the holder. Not sure what to think about this. I've checked the datasheet... considering the possibility I was sent the wrong items but the packing list shows the items I ordered. The reflectors have no markings to verify part number.

I am seriously tempted to buy a 3D printer and create a COB mounting/reflector solution that is easy and cheap.

Here are our options as I see it.
1) Ideal chip loc holder + reflector adapter + LEDIL angelina $10-14 per cob and you have to source 3 different parts.
2) BJB holder + LEDIL. good luck finding the BJBs at any US retailer.
3) Khatod : expensive , available direct, but high MOQs 50+ units min order.
4) Kingbrite holder/ideal holder plus lens: heavy, massive lens needed to fit 3590. lenses to keep clean. extra holes to tap
5) TE connectivity Lumawise Z50 holders: limited availability on mouser for larger COBs

only mounting reflector it's simple to do...interesting would be a new holder with more simple and safe wiring

If you get 3d printer will they be cheep ?
I understand printer is expensive but the print medium and Reflective paint will be expensive too.

We need to ask Jerry to keep all these ledil parts and holders.

I wanted to make a reflector with party cup. Compatible with ledil holder. And paste some mylar in the cup and do some PAR chart. ,I dropped the idea after I realized how quickly things melt and catch fire near LES.

So, i need a holder by ideal then i need a holder for reflector, isn't that too complicated? I tapped holes for screws, made "vacuum" with thermal paste, fixed by a "non-holder", and it's not enough...this is really pisses me off. Could you show me why it's not enough? Why Ledil isn't mention about that?

Anyone order 3590s from Kingbrite recently? I ordered a couple and they threw in free cob holders. These are plastic, 2 screw, solder points uncovered. They fit in the 78mm lenses. With th 78mm lenses there's not a lot of room for wiring if a rubber grommet is used, but could probably still make things work.

I checked kingbrite's web space and they don't offer them for sale, maybe just giving out freebies while they have them.
