I have never ran a name brand ballist, running a hydrogalxay and a thunder ballist now, both have held their own! I did have an iPower, it went down after a year of use. I get all my stuff 2nd hand off CL too. IMO hid is great! U just need an air cooled hood most times and a properly rated cfm fan to push air through it.don't get to cheap with your carbon filter though, I used to run the cheap Amazon ones, they got me by, but switched to Can Fans and they get the job done much better as far as odor
I troll CL pretty much everyday looking for deals and once in awhile I can find exactly what I am looking for; problem being that generally I find exactly what I am looking for when I run out of money. I got a great deal on CL for my fan. I bought a Vortex 6" with a rated cfm of 449 for $40.00. As I was packing it up, the seller said that he didn't need the filter, because he just sold the fan, so he just gave it to me. I got the stuff home and found out that not only did he sell me a Vortex fan but he threw in a Phresh 6" filter for free that was used for maybe 20 minutes and then never used again until I hooked it up. So, yep, I know what you mean.
I have read over and over again that Apollo ballasts are probably the best deal out there. Both HT and Cheech and Chong have raved about their performance. They are cheap and I guess do the job pretty well.

That's pretty awesome Mr. Black Thumb! Thanks for looking out for me! All I need is a ballast and bulbs to convert over. I had no idea that HTG had a sale going on. I will check them out when I am done here. I believe the issue of the electric bill sky rocketing due to changing over from fluorescents to HID was addressed by someone else previously; I just forgot. They had a pretty valid point: if you take six 55 watt bulbs and add the 23 watt cfl that hangs from the top of The Tron and add all of that together you come up with 353 which is really close to 400 watts anyway; so I may be using just as much power with The Tron as a HID anyway. I just don't know if there is a difference in power consumption with fluorescents vs. HID, or is power consumption power consumption regardless of the bulb(s) that you use. Anyway, sorry I babbled again, I am on the hunt for a affordable ballast that I can use and will take a real hard look at HTG now that you have brought this to my attention. Thanks man!

No, not yet. When I did my research on bulbs I found that The Eye Hortilux was one of the better ones and when I asked shop guys," If I could grow a plant from beginning to end with one bulb, what would it be?" They all answered The Eye Hortilux metal halide. This is because it is supposed to have enough red in it to flower/bloom. I am more than certain that you have a great bulb. I will keep an eye out to follow your posts as I am very interested in how things turn out. Good luck!

I actually got the Super HPS instead of the Blue because the manager of the hydro store told my that I could run the blue start to finish but the HPS is a better choice for all around growth because of its enhanced blue spectrum. And it was like $20 less than the Blue MH so I figured he wasn't bullshitting me. So I pulled the trigger on the Eye Hortilux 400 watt Super HPS. Seems to get nothing but good reviews, so I figured I would give it a try. I usually run the cheap ass bulbs and just get new ones for every run because they are like $20-$25 but after thinking about it I figured if the hype is true I may get a better crop so we will see.

Heisenberg on the left, day 41
Toofless alien taking over the tent, day 32

And then my 4 TGA kaboom (jacks cleaner f1Xvortex) day 23
And 1 Serious Seeds AK47 day 13 (in the middle)
Getting hacked on and super cropped in an attempt to get a modified uncle Bens/mainline goin for 6 or 10 tops each :)
Also keeps them small and manageable while we wait for the autos to finish up

I got hooked up with a box of some very cool samples from Rx Green Solutions that I will be implementing on this grow when I get my HS planted. I will put up some pix of all the cool stuff they got me tonight. I also went out and got a new bulb today. its Eye Hortilux 400 watt HPS. Anyone else use this bulb?
That bulb will work fine. You could get some 6500k cfl to start the seeds and grow them the first few weeks. The blue will tighten the internodes and that will help when switching to the hps.
