my viparspectra is wiping the floor with my vero29s watt for watt

i figured i would try out these new fangled bulbs - but something is amiss.

i ran two side by side tents with a 200 watt vero bulb and 200 watt blurple LED. few weeks later the results are astonishing - the blurple tent is thriving while the timber tent has gone to shit. either the whole chip-on-board thing is a scam or i screwed something up big time

the vero plants have grown large, spindly leaves and become severely discoloured. the stems are thick and vibrant however the plants look sick.

the blurple plants have rich green leaves and thick, dense development. they are looking great!

i ran 6 plants in each tent same strains all healthy and vibrant at the start, small plants about 1 month old. the vero light was about 2-2.5 feet above the plants and the vipra was about a foot over the plants. both tents ran 75-85 degrees

blurples chillin

blurple gsc (notoriously slow grower)

typical vero results

stunted height, sickly look but enormous leaves (vero)

my speculations

- the vipra bulb has a blue spectrum which is better for veg. maybe the vero's are designed for flowering plants

- the plants were too small to handle the vero bulbs and got burned due to the intensity of the light. I was running the 200 watt framework at 100% output

please help me determine the issue. I had ordered some more vero bulbs and I am seriously regretting that decision

Which COBs did you purchase?

How many mA?

How far from the canopy?
it was timber's 200 watt vero29 framework . the lights are 2-2.5 feet from the canopy run on 100% output

the other bulb was a viparspectra kit (200 true watts) about 15" from the canopy.

the viparspectra tent also had better airflow which may be a factor. both tents had circulating fans, exhaust fans, and passive intake but the vero tent had weaker fans (these fans have worked fine for veg in the past)

What spectrum cobs are you running in the Vero fixture. The viparspectra is definitely adding more blue which does help in veg. But 200w of Vero at 100% can be way too much for a young plant. You may have blasted them and theyre taking a bit longer to adjust. Depending on what version and Ma your running can help determine how far would be the best height or intensity.

That last 2 pics show clear signs of deficiencies. Calcium I think (maybe more), tho it would help if it was in higher resolution. Maybe the feed isn't strong enough, maybe they're just not transpiring enough (calcium can only be uptaken by them drinking). There are a lot of reasons that plants won't uptake enough when grown in soil. If you had bad air circulation, coupled with (or even leading to) high humidity, this may have been enough to cause this.

Make sure your humidity isn't too high (or they won't transpire)
Make sure you're feeding them enough
If all else fails, bump up the Calmag on the vero plants. A lot of full spectrum growers (white led and cmh) report needing a bit more.

the vero plants have grown large, spindly leaves and become severely discoloured.
The discoloration is from the deficiencies .

The growth is what I would expect from a powerful, full-spectrum light. Plants will grow differently depending on the light source. If light levels are on the low side they will often grow fatter leaves to catch more light. With a more powerful light and a full spectrum, they will look more like the bottom pictures. I've been growing under cmh for some time and am now switching to cob. My plants have always looked like the ones in the bottom pics (the shape and size of the leaves, not the discoloration), I prefer the look of the bottom ones over the top ones tbh. They just look like they have more potential (though being held back by poor nutrition)

wait till they flower. compare bud density etc...i cant imagine the viparspectra will do it. i had a mars hydro reflector (higher red spectrum than your viparspectra) but my autoflower still stunted in flower and it didnt changed till i hang some cree cobs in my tent. From there they exploded.

The first 2 pics look like you ran them through a picture editing tool and added saturation, sharpening etc. The 3rd pic under the Vero is taken with a white background, it's blurry as fuck and there's been no saturation, sharpening etc.

To be fair, take a clear and altered pic of the Vero plant also so they all look the same.

Were these overwatered at one point? The one plant in pic 1 and 2 has some random watering on it while the others look bone dry. Usually the soil is either all wet or all dry. Looks like a gnome took a piss on it and that could possibly be your problem. Gnome piss is high in calcium and could have caused toxicity.

i didn't edit any of the pictures

My experience has been the opposite. Growth has been at an explosive rate in hempy buckets under Vero 18s. What temp LEDs are you using? I have my plants under (2)3500k and (2)5000k and they couldn't look happier. Meanwhile, the viparspectra plants are taking forever to grow.

Its your grow skills.

If you can't manage to keep them green in veg then that's on you.

Chronic under watering.
can you explain why the other tent is looking fine? my feeding and watering schedule has worked for years without vero bulbs, if the plants need more food and water with these bulbs it's a learning curve which is why i'm asking.. i really want these bulbs to work. the fact these plants are dry in the picture doesn't mean they are chronically underwatered, they are about to be transplanted in the picture

You vero's put more usable light to the canopy let's start there. How many watts and what size space is the vero light in? Why are you so far from the canopy with the vero's? Your plants look deficient as others have said. I do not see signs of anything that would indicate the COB's of all lights regardless of brand are the issue. It seems you're trying to use 2 different lights the same way. As someone else mentioned too the Vipar and any blurple will veg just fine, but come flower time it's a different story. You need to get your growing dialed in before you start blaming the lights man, and I do not mean that in a disrespectful way at all just the truth.

I've already answered most of these questions in the OP.. Ive used the exact same 2x4 tents for both lights. both are 200 watts at the outlet. the vero's are 2 feet from the plants and the vipar is 1 foot (I've heard that vero's need more clearance, is this wrong? I've fed them the exact same water and nutrient schedules using the exact same strains. last week i moved two discoloured plants from the vero tent to the vipar tent and it has since turned around. the vero plants keep getting worse and worse

The plants will feed more and differently under the more efficient lights (Vero's). And sorry for the redundant questions but I just wanted to be 100% clear before proceeding and discussing further is all. How tall are the 2x4's?

Does your Vero light have a dimmer?

My old 260 watt QB was still too much light dimmed down to 200 in my 2x4. You probably have a 5 foot height in your 2x4 as most are like this? Try dimming the light down under 200 and getting it closer you want to be between 12-16" distance to canopy with the COB's, and this will vary greatly by genetics.

I vegged much larger and healthier plants with two Citizen COB's in my 2x4 running 110 watts total than I did with the QB at 200-260 watts.

As these lights and drivers get more efficient it's my personal belief based on my testing that we do not need as much HP, this is something I am proving with my COB's (2200 watts) in my 3x3 vs my 600 watt HID in the other 3x3.........

Thank you for the patient and informative response. I think the lights are a bit overkill for the young plants which were only 30 days from seed. I tried to compensate by putting the lights very far above the plants but the better method would have been to dim the lights. I am going to try running the lights at 50% output and lowering them to 18 inches from the canopy. I will also water the vero plants daily as opposed to every other day, increase the calmag and nutes to 4/5 watering from every other water.

I have 400 watts more of vero which arrive in a couple of weeks. At that point I will consider putting all the vero's into my flowering tent and using the blurples for veg

- do you mean to say 2200 watts in a 3x3 tent?
