In determinate varieties, there is a reason. The plant only grows one way. If there are a bunch of leaves well behind on the stalk they contribute nothing to production. Since the stalks on greenhouse determinate tomato plants can grow a long as 30' or more over the several year life of the plant, periodic defoliation becomes necessary to maintain production.For fungal issues and easier harvest................it's not for increasing yields
