Im also interested in this as an aluminum worker i have lots of different profiles of aluminum but no actal heatsink
Don't see why the profiles wouldn't work, ally is good for heat conduction and, obviously depending on the size and shape of the profile, gives you a decent surface area exposed to the air.
It's the two factors you want, thermal conductivity and surface area. A "U" channel obviously has more exposed surface are than a square channel, hence why heatsinks are finned and not a square block, but in my experience strips don't run THAT hot so a square channel should be able to dissipate the heat with ease thanks to 3 sides being exposed to the air (not including any other factors such as fans blowing air around in your room/tent).
