I definitely am getting purple stems directly exposed to white LEDs and COBs on some strains and some individuals within strains. I have for years and I had it happen the same way with old Philips CMH Retrofit bulbs. With the CMH the outline of a leaf could be easily seen on the stem. Never with HPS. Higher blue content in spectrum was the suspected reason according to some.

What I see is similar to growers looking for a solution in the bottom of a bottle. That wont solve your problem and neither will buying the latest led tech.
If the lights were perfect then r and d would stop, we woldnt see things like r-spec or prawns high lights and any number of other innovations.

I do think companies are watching what we are doing and I will continue to evaluate options for adding ir and uv to my cobs.

I think each strain/cut will be different have its own peculiarities. We have great results in flower with led but our veg is so so. Its almost impossible to give the plants more than 10000lux/150ppfd at veg stage and i know they should be able to handle more.
 
Some are just more perfect.
Current and future R&D will never make today’s COBs and Boards put out less light than they do now so why continue to use the obsolete stuff and miss out on more and better bud?
 
This a mother under a V1 3000k 80H 24/0. Stems always turn purple under high light and slow growth. I've had it happen on revegs and on 12 week 13hr on flower cycle. Right now, its got nute burn because its gone into some slow growth after i trimmed, theres no deficiency or cold though, it doesnt typically purple either. The problems we have is we never see a plant from the top usually from the side. From a top angle, anything thats getting light usually get covered by new growth. I got purple under some blurples too. I had some large plants under a HPS and a MH and used a blurple to supplement some side light, everywhere it hit, it turned the stems purple. Half of its genetics and half of it depends on light. Some people blame cold or deficiencys, those also create slow growth, slow growth leads to old growth not being able to deal with high light without new growth coming in to protect it. Leaves are more rare to purple because in high light they tend to bleach, yellow crisp up and fall off, theyre just too delicate. Some say that the pigments are created by hormones, and that once those purple hormones start they tend to keep going a while, so if you get purple stems in veg, no matter what theres a decent chance you can get some purple bud. My theory is that if you were to put a little UVA in with 301B, it could kick in those hormonee and it would purple almost anything, i think HLGs on the same line if thinking. It all comes down to the ratios, id imagine thered be so much heat and UV on HID it would fry most stuff before it could purple. My 600W MH gave me a few crunchy corncob looking colas.

My plants are vegging under 500-600ppfd like 18 days from clone they are doing fine I always set it at least 400ppfd growth is to slow if you go any lower
 
This is the new RSPEC after 1 week, earlier V2 3000k 120H. High temps, CO2. Maxibloom, tap water. Coco perlite. Standard 30 day veg and 12/12. Flipped it 10 may, will finish right after 1 july. I still am under the impression it's more that we don't take into account the DLI cycle of the plants for their stage of growth their in. That's the only time I run into trouble is when I'm trying to blast them with lighting when they are young.
Blast a plant in veg on a 18/6 with 800 u/mols m/2 at canopy level and you get 51.8 DLI. That same u/mols m/2 at 12/12 gives you 34.5 DLI which from my experience is the sweat spot for my plants in flower and more in the 20-25 DLI range for veg.
Now knowing that plants use up most of their nutrition produced by photosynthesis during the dark cycle, independent from a light reaction, do we know how much of the stored nutrition is actually used during that period, maybe it's a simple fact that the plant hasn't used up enough of the stored nutrition and as such is not signaling the production of exudes to the root zone to signal nutrient uptake slowing the availability.
These are all just hypothesizes but the more I experiment with these numbers the better my results.
 
I have no experience with strains that are supposed to develop purple stems.

I do have experience with my own strain having purple stems when things are not dialed in.
Mg deficiencies is one suspect I consider causing my stems to purple and I would guess other mistakes I made have caused them also.
When dialed in the same strain has green stems.

I can't tell the difference between strains that should and should not have purple stems just by looking at pictures.

Can any of you guys look at plant pictures without knowing the strain and tell the difference between purple stems that are strain related and purple stems that are not strain related?

Because balancing on the edge of a blade is difficult. It is necessary though and I am grateful there are those willing to do it because it advances the cause.

Because I am pulling down over a lb per multistrain run using less than 300W of cob?

Because my stash jars are full and my hash bin is receiving top colas?

Because my lights are off and will be until this fall?

There is a logic to running a piece of equipment to the end of its servicable life. Though I may scowl at someone using HID, shoot them a hairy eyeball er 2 I understand why.
