Quick back story. After a 8 year hiatus from growing, I recently purchased general hydroponics powergrower because growing is now legal in good ol Canada. I was growing a very old purple kush seed from crop king. Fast forward I ended up getting terrible algae in my system which I have never encountered before as im used to just black bubble buckets and hydroton. I ended up killing the plant it got horrible root rot in which i just didnt think it was going to recover from. So i was going to give up and I started researching waterfarms and I came across SCOTTYBALLS waterfarm grow of pineapple express and it has inspired me. The purple kush was growing faster than anything ive seen before until the root rot algae fiasco.

So this is what im using
3x3x6 tent
A Meizhi led 600w (actually 220w)
General hydroponics powergrower
A black bucket for a rez
Hydrofarm 400gph pump
I will be using Emerald Harvest nutrients just because I like screwing around with nutrients

So i found in one of SCOTTYBALLS posts that he added a rez to his bucket. So i did the same because its a pain in the ass to change all the time especially when the plant gets a root ball. And seeing as i plan on a scrog, it will be easier. See the pics!

I will take any and all help/ criticism thats why I put this grow to the public. Ive read SCOTTYBALLS thread many times. If the nutes start to fuck up, im going to buy flora nova and just keep it simple.

Its a girl!! (I hope lol) so that is good news shes out looking at light. I bubbled water for 24 hours yesterday and im going to change the water. It will be the last time for a week. Also some pics at the ridiculous emerald harvest line up i have lol. I know there is shit I dont need, and overkill and ill probs eat my words later, but who cares. Im sorry now for the burple light if its deficient or has some problem i will turn them off for better pics.

Humidity 28%
Ph is 7.0 I will adjust to 5.5. I find that new tap water here takes a bit to adjust the ph and stabilize
I dont think ph is really a factor right now anyway because there are no nutes but i will still adjust. I will check ph again tonight just to make sure

Calling this day 3 it was put into rapid rooter oct 4th

White rhino looks good its growing fast!

Humidity 25%
Ph 6.0

Decided just to leave the ph alone tonight. Lifted rez lid just to take a look at water. Looks good. Tomorrow will lift up main rez just to see if clay deposits are there and to clean out rez. Temps are a little high but its starting to get cold here and the furnace gets turned on. Will cover the vent soon. There is a window above the tent will consider pulling air from it if needed.

So dry man, its always windy where i am so it dries out everything. Hey question, do you always give your waterfarm h202? I tried that last time and i think i put too much in and burned the shit out of the purple kush. What % do you put in?

I used 5 ml per gallon H2O2. Yes I always put it in.

Day 4 seedling looks good. Routine bucket inspection.
Top rez a little dirty to be expected. Newer hydroton. Cleaned out with tap water.
Bottom rez looks good will check the filter on pump come water change time.
Water is more ph stabilized @ 6.2 will adjust to under 6. 1ml ph down. Ph @ 5.7.
Need to mark bottom rez with a line to track water consumption. Will add air stone also soon.

I like that the top rez keeps the hydroton from going to thr bottom rez. Unexpected but sweet. I love this set up so much more.

Hey can any passersbys tell me if you require a chiller for your rez? Or if you use one? Ive heard mixed reviews on it but i did get root rot last time. What do you think and what do you use??

I opened up my window today made a huge difference in my grow room temp. Added a temp probe to my rez. First put prob in rez today was @ 24.3

20.4 tent
21.9 rez
Humidity 21%
Ph is 6.6!! Will adjust again down below 6.
Forgot that I added new water today. When i checked the rez last night I didnt account for the water I dumped out that was in the bottom of the upper rez. Bottom rez was low. 3 gallons will be the start till the plant starts drinking lots
New ph @ 5.5

Seedling looks good leaves are growing. Going to explore chilling my rez i think. im scared of root rot again maybe will start with just putting in h202 first.
Will wrap bottom rez in tinfoil just to help reflection as well. No pics now for a bit. The seed stage is boring.

How long do you wait before giving it to your seedlings?

I just add it to the water. Seedlings don’t need it really. You can wait till they get bigger. The reason I start adding when they are small is because of the tendency for algae build up on the hydroton pebbles.

Concerning the chiller... I have never used one. I have never had root rot. What were the temps in your tent when you got the root rot? The winter time you shouldn’t have a problem with heat. Keep the room cold or blow in cold air from outside into the tent with the ducting down low so it blows directly towards the Rez.

Temps were at like 25 but i discovered algae late as i was not used to this and about 3 days later my plant hated life and was brown. Im really new with waterfarms but I really like the idea of them and im determined to make it work. What is your grow temps like? How cold is cold in your personal opinion? You right about the winter, I will use that to my advantage. Thank you for your help and advice i appreciate it.

I closed my grow room window last night because it was going to be well below freezing. Opened again now though.

Seedling looks good growing more leaves now. Will note there is no more salt buildup around the ring anymore with new setup.
