This graphic makes it pretty obvious that even a top-down ultra-authoritarian regime with extreme controls on every aspect of society like PRC can't stop the spread of this thing. A few cases becomes many cases because it spreads for days before symptoms show. Draconian measures such as shutting down entire metropolitan areas have done very little to slow the spread of this thing within China. It is apparently slowing international spread though, which is good. One thing that worries me is that it has spread to Xinjiang which is very likely linked to other countries on the Eurasian Steppe via unregulated and ancient trade routes. If it gets to Afghanistan, I doubt it will be identified before it spreads. Likewise if any Chinese traveler went to a poor Caribbean country like Dominican Republic which has not had to deal with something like this before, it may be already spreading.

A case was quickly identified in West Africa. The authorities there are well prepared as they have been containing a series of Ebola outbreaks for years.

The fact that it has such a long incubation period, wherein the contagion is very likely to spread, means that the authorities are always a couple of steps behind this thing. It WILL spread and you can't do shit about it. So don't worry and don't be hysterical. Think of it like a really bad cold that will be going around, that's exactly what it is.

This does make it sound like hysteria imo. Even if it spread to 20 percent of the world, 30-100m would be a fairly low fatality rate. This is why I am trying to stick to the facts we know before making predictions about how many people will die.

Hubei still has more than 90% of the cases and almost all of the fatalities. None of the other outbreaks have incubated long enough to tell.

I probably should've known better

ended up going to sickbay on the destroyer and they gave me donnatal, a preparation of belladonna (deadly nightshade) and phenobarbital
I had an anaphylactic reaction to a really nice fillet of what I was told was marlin not long ago. It turned out to be escolar and it almost killed me.

Yup pretty sure when you run out and buy cases of rations when, what, 5-6 people have been identified as infected in the US that could be classed as over reaction ...... just sayin. Digging defensive trenches around your perimeter for the upcoming civil war could likewise be considered extreme. But I guess an ounce of prevention, or the boy-scout motto. My girlfriend is becoming obsessed with this thing so maybe that’s making me a tad naive. Fuck she bought a box of masks yesterday, I was hoping we could play doctor ..... ummm nope lol.

I still have people dearly hoping I'm wrong because the facts sound so scary. They honestly don't sound that scary to me. Millions of people get extremely ill annually, this will contribute a few more million to that every year. What am I missing here?

This was a China condemnation thread all along.

What that (post #112) means for the US is that our authorities will have to either quarantine the 240 evacuees currently enroute to some military base somewhere, thereby admitting that they're wrong and that this disease can in fact spread before a carrier shows symptoms...

Or they could just let an outbreak occur in the US. I mean, personally, I think there will definitely be an outbreak soon anyway but I'm watching nonetheless.

if this coronavirus reaches America unchecked, at it's current fatality rate, 30 million Americans will die....
Dont forget how seeing a doctor almost requires a loan to afford, many will die just cause they are unable to see one, or wont miss work due to fear of losing money and becoming homeless, so expect the minimum wage/poor to spread it even more.
Did they person who just made your drive thru order look a little pale? Did the starbucks lady just Sneeze? Is that Janitors nose running?
All those at the bottom that are overlooked by the rich, will be the downfall....

I saw a video this morning claiming Russia has two possible cases, showed someone being moved in one of those plastic covered isolation gurneys.
