Lighting question 4 (600w) or 2 (1000w) in 5x9 tent

Hello everyone I'm going to be running a 5x9 tent for flower and am wondering what lights to go with?

Do i go after the better sq ft coverage with the 4 600s?

Or do i go after the higher intensity of the 2 1000w lights?

Will be a sealed tent with c02 supplemented, soil grown and going for about 24 ladies in the room if this info matters to anyone or influences the choice

About $1000 would like to keep it a little under and save anywhere possible. But I am heavily leaning towards 3 600w lights now after talking to a seasoned buddy of mine.

That isnt much of a budget for what you are talking about setting up. How do you intend to run a sealed tent and keep it cool? I would consider running a single 5x5 with a single 1000w. Also, 24 is a shitload. How do you intend to water them?

Well one light, ballast, bulb and hood goes for just over 300$ where it at so I can easily afford 3.
I have a 28k but window unit that the tent will be in (10x10 room). I have a 45 gallon trash can I’ll be using as a main water res and a 35 gallon I’ll be using to mix nutes and feed from there by a 1/4 hp submersible pump with garden hose and wand.

I’ve considered the single 5x5 but would not be fully utilizing the space I have available with that this is my semi first/ second grow

I was 16 in my buddies garage with a 4x4 1000w light in high school that we went halves on

Keep it simple to determine how many HID you need for your space.

At 5 x 9 you have 45 sq/ft.

Arguably the very best Single Ended HID with the most umol is the 1000w Hortilux HPS at 1600umol.

Hortilux rates this bulb as suitable for a 4 x 4 area. 16 sq/ft.

That is equal to 62.5w Sq/ft

Ok you have 45 sq/ft right??

That means to supply your sq footage you would need 3 x 1000w Hortilux HPS. This would give you 66.6w Sq/ft., which is the same as using a 600w Hortilux HPS in each 3 x 3 area, or 9 sq/ft.
You would need 5 x 600w Hortilux HPS to cover 45 sq/ft
5 x 600w would give 5000umol More than 3 x 1000w

2x 1150w Gavita Dual Ended lights are good for 10 x 5 area. but you have to have at least 36in-40in from the top of the canopy or it WILL FRY them. You also have to have the ability to cool them, as they produce HUGE amounts of Infrared.

The multiple SE-HID will have more umol vs 2 DE HID. 3 1000w Hortilux have 4800umol, 2 DE Gavitas have 4200umol. Not sure about the 600w but slightly more than the 3 1000w Hortilux.

50w per sq ft is a general guideline for HPS.

Since you mention growing in a tent, you are most likely height limited so I would go with 600w’s for better spread. What is the height of your tent?

1000w lights require a further distance from canopy. Once you factor in the height of the pots, hood, and 24-36”distance from canopy, you aren’t left with much available height if your tent is 8’ or shorter.

If you had 10-12’ ceilings, 1000w would be the way to go.

Philips DE bulbs are rated at 2,400 umol when boosted to 1,150 watts. Thats 4800umol for two of them which is exactly the same as 3 1000w Hortilux. The sun system air cooled double ended hoods solve a lot of the heat issue and are the only air cooled de hoods on the market suitable for de bulbs.

oh your talking 1000 for just lights? I would run either two of these

or better yet, two of these

I was thinking 3 of these to get more even coverage on the canopy what do you think?

I think two 1000's in the xxxl hoods will get you just as good if not better light spread. The best spread would be parabolic reflectors but they arent efficient.

Large reflector with good spread without breaking the bank.

Just pointing out, that Kahuna doesn't come with a socket and is only 6" exhaust.

Yes they're expensive, but...

You definitely can't beat them...

okayyyy i think you guys have convinced me to go with the 2 1ks in the magnum xxl hood and that low profile will be perfect.. also the tent has the ability to extend 2' in height if needed

If your going to fill the complete 45 sq/ft, 2000w isnt enough.

2000w and 45 sq/ft is 44w sq/ft. For optimum production, and growth, one needs 62.5w sq/ft
2x 1000w SE-HID are at best good for 4 x 8 depending on the bulb.

Most ballasts will run 1150w. Turning them up to 1150 he will be at 51w/sqft. Thats enough. Even 45 is enough. Running at that 60w threshold is intense, much more likely to run into issues.

45w sq/ft isnt enough for optimal production.

Ive been using 1000w SE-HID since they came out in 1978, and have never run into issues, but Ive always had good growing conditions, like tons of fresh air, and ventilation.

Also if one uses a DE HID with the 4800umol, your good to go with 2 lights in 45 sq/ft.... DE-HID is good for a 4 x 6 anyway. so 2 of them will cover 50 sq/ft.

The going by w/sq is a guide, and is correct for measuring normal SE-HID, but the DE-HID is a bit more efficient, and powerful so it doesnt really apply to DE-HID
2 of the DE-HID is equal in PAR to 3x 1000w Hortilux.

But 45w sq/ft isnt strong enough for Single Ended HID. It is for DE-HID at 1150w.

The sun is closer to 125w sq/ft at the equator. Its never less than 100w sq/ft. Go up 6000-8000 feet into the Andes, and the light is even stronger, especially UVA/B. The main thing is the stronger the light, the more fresh air/CO2 you need.

We start seeds under 1150w DE Gavita.
