Weed smell, is it legal?

Our neighbours went crazy after we politely asked them to keep their cat on their property. This cat would actually lift its' leg and piss through the screen door into the house, if we left the door open with only the screen door closed.

They called the cops so many times, we had them almost kick our door down one time for no reason. Finally like you said they got sick of showing up and wouldn't come anymore. These neighbours had yelled at us constantly about our tenants smoking weed on the porch.

So last summer we planted 4 huge pot plants in the middle of the yard (think 20 year old subdivision, small yards). We already had video survelliance but we added solar powered spot lights as well. They definitely called the city of Barrie about the smell but the cops told them there was nothing they could do. Sure, they could try a civil suit but we have way too much evidence of destruction of property by their animals for a counter suit. So they just had to suck it. I'd prefer to get along to go along but some people are just divisive and looking for a fight.

We got a real nice glow in our bellies every time we thought about how they must be smelling our plants 24/7.

It's too bad we couldn't be neighbors and let our neighbors be neighbors. The street would be extra stinky lol.

The room isn't the main problem it's the rest of the garage where I trim, dry, cure. The smell leaks out and you can smell it when you pass by it. I would need another exhaust system, plus an air tight seal for the entire garage but that's a lot of investment for 4 plants.

This isn't like Leamington, Ontario where you can smell weed kilometers away. It's a faint smell that my neighbor has picked up on and he is OCD about it.

Yes you can grow up to four plants, outdoor or in. That is unless you reside in Manitoba or Quebec. We are not mature enough it seems. There are requirements, like not being next to a school and you need a fenced yard.

The school rule makes me laugh. If a kid trespasses on your property and steals your plants, it's your fault for not having a fence.

I did when the house was for sale last Spring, it smelled like 3 houses down. My goal was to find weed friendly neighbors. They didn't mind last year but all of a sudden in the middle of winter with a filter it's a problem.
 
I wonder if the room has negative or positive pressure. They shouldn't smell it one house over if you have a small grow and a filter. Maybe your filter isn't totally full, and air is just taking the path of least resistance.

Or are you running a filter with full speed cooling air for a hood? Sometimes you just need to slow down the filter-fan, and cool the hood with air that's from OUTSIDE the room.
 
As much as id like to say fuck him, you're not breakin the law, is it worth it? If the room isnt the problem and hes complaining about where you trim and dry, im assuming you dont mind the smell, can you dry your weed somewhere else in your house? Im not sayin throw your plants out, im just saying maybe save yourself the bullshit.

Get a 4x8 tent for the garage, dry and trim inside of it. Exhaust it out the roof. Most the smell should stay above the houses.
 
There is nothing illegal at all and your neighbor really has no options, you can't get in trouble. That said, he is your neighbor ... you have to live next to him and in my experience having pissed off shitty neighbors never ends well (my sister's asshole neighbor was so bad that it drove her to selling her home and moving out).

Maybe show him that you are trying, that you've invested money in filters (with pictures I guess). He sounds like he has uh other problems and you are probably just getting caught up in his shitty life, but if you at least show him that you're trying; if he is a reasonable human being perhaps that will help help him understand and mend relations.

Also I don't see how small claims court would get him anywhere because he would have to prove that the smell was coming from your house and how is he going to do that? Perhaps it's coming from his other neighbours house, or the one across the street, or maybe he has a family of skunks living under his porch? Also you have to prove damages and an annoying smell isn't a damage as far as I can tell.
 
You could vent through a large group of cover plants to help mask the smell. I remember back in the day before my state went full legal, I had my vent exhaust come out into a forest of peppermint.

The filter is only on 12hrs a day because I don't want to pump warm air out of the garage when they are off. My ekectric bill would be insane.
 
I would try to filter the air better, and pump it into my attic or garage for heat during lights on. or run a cheap 4" carbon filter 24/7.

All that heat is good in winter. You definitely don't want to put the whole house under a vacuum, that will effect your heating bill quite a bit. There should be a good amount of Co2 in winter anyway.

Having a house under vacuum completely negates insulation. Around here, people unwittingly do it with radon fans.

In summer, intake and exhaust from outside is best on the electric bill.

When I went to the local supply they were out of carbon filters. There was this in stock and so far no problem and I smoke. I don't even vent external here. Sounds like your place might be larger being a garage. Try it on timer when fan is on every other hour.
