Trump was already looking at life in prison before he ever took the oath of office and knew it, it's been one long attempt at getting away with the crime of the century. It started out as an ill considered marketing plan for his failing businesses, he wanted to barely lose and thought that he would, but he fucked up again and with Russian help he won. His only way out was to run out the statue of limitations by winning the election or by seizing absolute power as a tyrant.
