I had slobber & snot all over my t shirt & face. She scared the shit outta me a half dozen times & I only had a single shot (.35 remington) pistol.
She kept coming back making sure I was backing up.

I could have easily killed her (with just cause) but I saw two cubs & didn't want to.
What the hell? Were you down on the ground pinned down? She spared you, you lucky bastard.

Probably 90-95% of Grizzly/Brown bear charges are bluff.
They come in really fast, make a shit load of scary noises & cover everything in front of them with snot & spit.

You'll have to pay attention - it goes really quick.

Though riding ATV's you could come up on them really fast & rifle is not accessible so I carried one of these while riding.

I almost walked in to a black bear one night and it ran away!

I remember when that pistol came out. Lot's of inexperienced shooters around here bought them and sold them months later with less than a box of bullets through them. The recoil was a bit too much for some people. There was a glut of them in the local gunshop here for awhile. I can see it's usefulness for big bear like what you had to deal with though. I carry a Glock 10mm for the same reason around the house. No brown bears around, so 10mm is fine for those oh crap encounters with black bear and feral dogs.

I reload (and have for 35+ years) - the cases are stupid expensive but better to roll your own than shell out up to $38 bucks for a cylinder full, plus the 440 gr hard cast will go clean through a bear even after smashing shoulder bones & those aren't available in store bought ammo.

I have a buddy that reloads and he loads me hard nosed rounds that are on the hot side. I have hollow point carry ammo for when I'm in town but at home it's these guys. IMG_20230306_121253567.jpg

Just a thought to mull over - some prosecutors have been know to take the tact that if you reload you were "looking forward to shooting someone".
I use spendy LE ammo in my carry weapons to negate that argument.
