Texas Legislature passed a law that applied to one county in Texas. Harris County -- the county in Texas with the highest population, highest number of Democrats, highest number of Black people, Highest number of Latino people and relatively lowest proportion of white people. The County was singled out by the Republican dominated Republican legislature and told, first by the legislature, then by the state's highest court that it must abolish its elections office.

One can argue whether or not there is good reason for this. The argument given by the law's supporters is not a good one and there is not good evidence to support that argument even if it were. But that's neither here nor there. The law is clearly unconstitutional. It was found unconstitutional by a lower judge in March of this year. The Texas Constitution prevents the Legislature from passing any laws that are not uniform throughout the state and only target a specific location. The Texas State AG (yeah, HIM). set aside that ruling until an appeal can be heard in the Texas Supreme Court to determine if the law is unconstitutional. Here is the hook:

On September 1, Harris County is ordered to dismantle their elections office and hand duties carried out by that office to county offices that have neither the staffing or experience to handle them. Anything can happen, but most likely, this law will be struck down some time after the Texas Supreme Court hears Harris County's argument against it in November.

Harris County Elections Office was too good at promoting voter turnout.

yep, i have a feeling this one is gonna be shot down by theTexas Surpreme Court here......and that him you refered to....has an impeachment trial next month.......

It's so underhanded in the way they are doing this. They have checkmated Harris County while no doubt that they knew it would not stand a constitutional challenge. By the time it is declared unconstitutional, the wrecking ball will already have done its job to Harris County's Department of Elections. They have a mayor's race to to decide in November, so for sure that one will be affected. Then primaries begin in January and on into the November general elections where, I suppose Texas was not at risk to vote for Biden but there are a lot of local seats that will have to contend with a disrupted elections. It's so fucked up.

But then again, kick the hornets nest and find out, as they say.

Stupid and mean sells with their base, Trump is proof, the dumber the better. The real problem the GOP has is they can't find anybody as crazy, desperate and bad as Trump, they instinctively know who would be willing to tear down the government, rule of law and burn the constitution. Unfortunately for him they have a trap called the 14th amendment for those who try and fail to tear down the government and constitution, not to mention the rule of law which he is currently dealing with.

Sounding desperate.

McCarthy Warns Gov't Shutdown Could Halt Biden Probe
Preventing a government shutdown is key to keeping the investigation into President Joe Biden afloat, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., alluded Sunday.

"If we shut down, all government shuts down — investigation and everything else — it hurts the American public. But if we're able to pass our appropriation bills, we're in a stronger position to remove those [former Speaker Nancy] Pelosi policies that are locked into law," the House Speaker said on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures."

During his interview, McCarthy insisted that he was working on a timescale to fund the government to avoid any last-minute deadlines. Such funding is crucial to the pursuit of a Biden impeachment.

Notwithstanding House Oversight Chair James Comer's own investigation into Biden, which details instances of using shell companies to launder money from foreign actors, according to a recent RealClearPolitics investigation, Biden's document scandal is "potentially more serious than just mishandling state secrets ... it could mushroom into a counterespionage case involving China and national security."

According to the New York Post, McCarthy has mentioned bringing a Biden impeachment inquiry forward. An impeachment inquiry is an investigation that can be viewed as a preceding step to a formal impeachment. But all this hinges on Congress funding the government by the September deadline.

"I don't believe we'll have enough time to pass all the appropriation bills by September 30. So I would actually like to have a short-term CR," McCarthy emphasized, referring to a continuing resolution.

However, if Congress fails to fund the government, a government shutdown will occur starting in October — fiscal year 2024.

But in addition to discussing the government shutdown, McCarthy also highlighted the growing concern around the Biden family's business dealings.

"We did not know of all these times the president lied to the American public," McCarthy stated. "I've had Democrats now tell me, they're very concerned because they back this president based upon what he told America. And with each turn, we find that was not true."

But, according to White House spokesman Ian Sams, the direct evidence, the information contained on Hunter Biden's laptop, and the paper trail outlined by Comer equate to a "conspiracy hole" led by House Republicans.

"There's no low they won't stoop to to push falsehoods about POTUS," Sams wrote on social media platform X.

Don't let your guard down listening to these not-MAGA fucks. Remember who they are, they haven't changed just because they get on MSNBC and badmouth the defendant. Christie is not to be trusted.
The difference is they are the Republicans that Democrats opposed when W won the presidency. They were assholes but weren't enemies of democracy. Dick Cheney supported torture in Iran. I never once heard Saint Liz Cheney say boo about that and she was voting for Trump administration's legislation before the 2020 election was done. Watch for Joe Scarborough to show his conservative stripes when our democracy is safe too.

So, yeah, they are the people who want to smash Social Security and oppose Medicare for All. They are the cut spending, small government, deregulate industry types. But they wanted to do it through the ballot box. I miss the days when a Republican win in a Democrat district did not imperil our democracy.
