Thanks, Annie! I did run F&D in my old apartment, but since bought a house in an illegal state, I didn't want any media to dispose of. I've always admired this thread and its systems, so I thought I'd switch it up and grow in air to avoid media. It is pretty fun so far, I'm just not a natural DIY guy, so it takes me more time and effort to build all this shit than the average bear. Two more systems to go, and the room is DONE. Then I can get back to my natural state, which is sitting on my ass ;)
I started in rails. I'm looking forward to seeing you knock it out of the park (as usual). How you like being a homeowner? I love that your son is helping so you're able to transfer your knowledge, that's sweet

You need to start somewhere. If you have a friend that is growing ask them if you can have some cuttings. If not you will have to start from seed the first time.

If you do have to start from seed use some Rapid Rooter plugs and just stick the plug in the net pot.

I recommend using feminised seeds. That way you won't have to pull any males and kill all the females in the process (the roots all grow together).

No matter what, eventually you will be using only cuttings so I'll start with how to take a cutting or clone as some call them.

I select a lower branch from one of my veg plants. It's way better to use a stem from the lower branches than from the top. The lower branches contain more of the hormones that it takes to start roots.

I use a razor blade to take the cutting. No special treatment here.

Moving on...
So right where your thumb and fingers are on this pic is where you cut for the clone?

I didn't know that, I'd love to see some pics of your old rail systems in action. I love owning my house, I initially wanted to get a mortgage, but it was such a hassle I just decided to buy all cash. Had to do something with that large pile of grow cash, it's almost as if a grew a house ;) It is awesome not to have to pay rent nor a mortgage payment. My kid is great, and appreciates saving thousands upon thousand of hours of study by being my mentee. Hope all is well with you...

What's bad about rope calk is it dries out and breaks down so you eventually have to replace it. Any type of weather sealer will work, it's just that some work better than others.

I've switched to using a cooler for my cloner a couple of years ago. It's completely water tight (no seal needed) and helps keep water temps in check. The downside is large coolers are expensive. I figure my cloner will last a lifetime so it's worth it in the long run.
This exact cooler is on sale on Amazon for $30. There is a darker blue version of the same model that is closer to $90, wtf? Make sure to order the ocean blue inexpensive version. I bought one to check it out, and just ordered another. Great price for an insulated, leak-free cloner or veg unit...

I am going to work my way through all 612 posts, but....

Would this work;

https://cropking.com/system/nft-4-6

Or is it a little too simple?

The setups y'all have built are incredible. I'm not sure I have the skills to do it. Maybe I should stick with a bucket system...

Can't make up my damn mind on what way to go with my new grow setup.

If you want a pound every 3 weeks (or whatever your number might be), then, like chess, you must start with your end goal in mind and work backwards.

Doing it this way will force you to think in terms of timelines, inputs, space required, labor time, all questions that need to be answered if you're serious about doing a "perpetual" (the rest of the planet calls it series production) operation. Feel free to DM me if you want to discuss this.

Well, my first attempt at this new system in my new room was a bust. I was used to growing sterile in my previous F&D system, so I tried that again. But the water quality at my new house in another State is horrible, so I got root rot. I was adding ungodly amounts of bleach, still no go. So, I decided to use Superstoner's suggestion of bennies - Pondzyme and GFF. That cured everything. Now I have super healthy plants and snow white roots, with even less maintenance than the bleach schedule. My temps in the rezes get pretty high, and still no problems.
Can u explain to me pondzyme and GFF u talking about for healthier roots ? Tnx

Do not mean to tell you what to do Tyler Durdan i know you from years ago and yu know how to grow...However i still think horizontal grows under a metal halide or HPS are wasting area plants could be getting hit with light from if removing the stupid reflectors (most do fuck all) and do a vertical or horizontal setup surrounding the BARE bulb 360' degree with plant tips, clones or scrogs...i got best results with sea of greens but these days with LED's do scrogs instead...Anyway an octogon or circular setup surrounding an HID bare bulb at least quadruples yields.

Go look at my thread in the vertical section and you'll see me pushing this hypothesis to its limits.

The TL;DR (thread is a few hundred pages by now lol) is that plants respond to the same inputs in the same way whether the setup is vertical or flatlander style. You get a bit of efficiency boost by skipping the reflector and using a round silo, I'd say 25-35% not quadruple. The real payoff is more plant per square foot of floor space.

Having continued the vertical program, I then developed it to use LED and was able to show an improvement in labor productivity because of ease of access.

There's no magic sauce in vertical gardening but it does solve more problems than it creates.

i would work my fucking ass off for a pound a week are you serious?!

thanks for this stink bud, i have a few questions if thats cool.

How do you combat blackouts and loss of power? do you have any personal experiences with that issue, i ask because i am thinking of going aero but ca is a vulnerable place.

thanks
Right!!!! Wtf. Lmaoooo shawty is tripping over there with that comment. Lol

I don't have natural DIY skills, either. I'm sure it took me twice as long to build these systems as it did for most guys here. I even wanted to pay someone to build them for me, but no takers. It really isn't difficult at all, the plans are in the thread and in Stinkbud's Amazon ebook for $5. Very easy to maintain, too. Give it a shot...

I have ditched those products for something even easier and more effective. It is called Ecofix from the company API, meant for ponds but it's unreal in hydro. It is the only product I use to keep the system and roots pristine, even with mid 80 rez temps. Super cheap on Amazon, I buy it by the gallon.

Yep, ttystikk had that shit down, I looked through his journals early on. I am going to switch over to LEDs soon, I think a 400+ watt board over each system should do it. I love the ease and productivity of my current set up, and I can't even sell all I grow anymore. No need for more weed backing up, I'm already at a 6 pound back up...

I think that if you replace an HPS thouie with anything less than 630W of LED you will be disappointed with the results. You can always dim it down (which hurts nothing and improves efficiency!) but they only get so bright.
