Cloning without hormones

Ok, I searched, and perused many threads and can't find one on this topic.

Is it possible to clone a plant without a rooting solution? Will the clipping try to develop roots on its own?

I don't have any rooting solution conveniently available to me but I want to take 2 branches off my plant and if I can use them for clones I'm going to.


I'm on a pretty tight budget. Like, I'm broke. So I can only get what my buddy is willing to give me.

You probably shouldn't be suggesting I steal something, but you have a point. And my list of morals is pretty short.

lol i know, i dont like suggesting things but that. i personally hate stealing, i went through a phase of it before i had a job (that lasted 5 months lol) but when im really desperate ( example : stuck away from home, no money, no food, i steal food from time to time). i know its wrong, and i dont like doin it. but as long as u do it to a big organization dont feel bad, they fuck over so many people every day, they can easily afford it, wont even notice it.

otherwise, 4 dollars dont sound too too bad i suppose. right now that would be outta my budget though haha

The saddest part is, I have a job and the only time I've worked was when I got trained. Every time I call back they say it's not busy enough. (Got hired by a motel).

So I'm employed but I don't work. And no work means no pay. If I was getting a paycheque I'd spend as much as I needed to in order to grow the most potent bud I can.

But back to the question. Is there any chance of successfully rooting a clone without hormones? If there's no chance at all, I'll go "acquire" some solution and make 2 clones. If there is a chance, I'll try one first then the other.

Yes, you can clone with just plain water.

yes you can root clones without any powder gel goop goo or magic sauce

just pop em in some peat packs and keep them wet/humid

Would you recommend a 45 degree cut, in presoaked potting soil?

it just significantly drops the success rate
I heard you throw cutting in water until they root
then plant them in their new grow medium ( soil, hydro, coco, etc)
Also heard rockwool cubes and peat pellets are good for rooting clones

Yes you can clone w/o root hormones. I did it.

Leave it (the stem) in water overnight...put into a small pot the next day. Cover with some plastic container. Lights on a 18/6 schedule. The light is obviously outside the plastic container...good...the clones need weaker light than a small plant would. You are going to use a spray bottle to mist the leaves twice a day or so. Open the container atleast once a day and breath into it before putting it back over the plant (C02).

In about a week to ten days you will have either succeeded or failed. If success...treat as a small plant! (lose the plastic cover, feed water to the soil...no more misting...etc.)

Ok, so to clear things up before I do anything.

Does the angle of the cut matter?

The cutting goes in water overnight, but doesn't need to start rooting before going in soil?

I clone with plain water. Cut the stem on a 45 degree angle under filtered water. Then make small vertical slices on that end. My success rate is around 10-20 percent. You'll need more than 2 clones if you want half a chance.

what if you were cloning outdoors? ( i may be doing this later in the year ) would you still have to find a way to reduce light? or just keep em under the sun?

I'm only trying for 2 clones because the clippings I'd be removing are for the main goal of increasing light to more necessary parts of the plant.

BakedinBC, I'm growing outdoors but I think cloning indoors has higher success.



I'll take pictures of every step/day for my attempt at this, then come back and update this thread with them.

I'd root 'em in the shade, definitely out of full sun. Rooting clones need as much energy as possible devoted to growing roots, not collecting food via photosynthesis. Also, with photosynthesis plants need to breathe which causes a big loss of moisture.

Also, Anjinsan suggestion of making a mini greenhouse with a clear plastic container is a good one.

As for angle of cut, what matters most is to reveal the cuticle layer just underneath the outer layer of skin. A 45 degree cut will reveal more cuticle then a 90 degree cut, but a few shallow slices into the outer skin will reveal even more.

i cloned mine 100% outside because of higher humidity/and warmer they only got about 6 hrs of direct sunlight so your mileage may vary

Ok, I have 2 branches I clipped off my plant. I cut them at 45 degree angle, and lightly shaved off some of the side matter of the bottom 3/4" and put them in water overnight. It's the same water I have set aside for watering the plant.

Should they have started to form roots in the water?
