Is potency determined by trichome count? Is it determined genetics only?
Does the visual number of trichomes determine how much thc is available?

The reason I ask is because the photos of various strains seem to show much different trichome counts. Some look covered and some look like they have none but are more potent.

I've been wondering that myself. My guess, is that the majority of the THC is inside the calyxs where we can't see it. I could be totally wrong, but like you, I would think that the strains with the most crystals are the strongest. Hmm...maybe it's the trichs themselves? Maybe they measure the THC content of the trichs?

No. It is a fairly good indicator but not always accurate.

It is mainly determined by genetics but is influenced by growing conditions and environment.

Not true. Most of the THC resides in the resin glands (Trichomes) but there may be a lot of trichomes which contain very little THC.

I just got done growing bagseed, and one of the strains looking like WW or Crystal or a strain like that. It was pretty good weed, much better than the regular 'dirt weed' that's usually around. BUT, I just sampled my first 'real' weed last night. It was Velvet Kush that's 7 1/2 weeks into bloom, and had less visible crystals than the bagseed plant i had. Well, let me tell you this...there was NO COMPARISON. That kush was so much better that I thought it was a completely different drug. So yeah, I'd say that it would be possible to have some nice looking weed that wasn't worth a crap. That wasn't my case, I am just saying that appearance can be deceiving. Go with good genetics, and you'll be a happy camper.

In most white strains the " white or THC " you think you see is actually stuff to gum up pests mouth parts. There are different types of trichomes, and only one kind gets you high. White Widow is the most famous for this, looks frosty as hell...but can only get you high for 15 min. at a time.

FUCK! I hope so, I just got my Nirvana Feminized WW in the mail. I was reading that other guys post thinking OMG why did I buy this. I always heard good things about WW growing up and now I will try it for myself. I have a feeling it will be the shit!

I can't speak for Nirvana WW but I am very happy with my WW. I don't think this guy smoked WW at all. I'm fairly sure you will enjoy it.

I would say that everybody has their own preferences when it comes to strains. To label white strains as not very potent is incorrect though. Potency is calculated by figuring the percent of THC. It is understood that THC is not the only psychoactive component to cannabis. And you say you are growing White Rino. Isn't this also a white strain? (which I seem to recall you saying white strains aren't very potent). And have you tried every breeders version of white widow? I mean, they all have their own version which I've been told can differ greatly. Think before you post irresponsible nonsense please.

I don't see how you say I'm attacking your position (which nobody here seems to agree with) when I said, and I quote: "Everybody has their own preferences when it comes to strains." How is that attacking your position? Explain that to me please. You didn't say "In my opinion........." or "I think...........". You stated your opinion as fact. Which scared the crap out of a guy who had just purchased some expensive white widow seeds. I've talked to people who didn't care for white widow but say what you want about it..............it is still a very potent strain, period.

Ok....ok... Now that's over, next question is....
I know that this might be a strain specific question but...

Do calyxes swell up during the last couple weeks?

I'm now into my 5th week of flower and everything looks great but I was wondering if the calyxes on the buds will all swell up like the calyx at the base of the petiole.

The calyx that first shows sex is the one I'm talking about. These have gotten huge lately but the ones on the buds are much smaller. Can I expect a nice calyx swell during the final couple weeks?

I'm not sure what to expect during the final stages, I have ordered Ak 48 and super skunk for my second grow, wanted to do some regs bagseed first to get my setup tuned. The buds I have now are extremely hairy but the calyxes seem to be lagging.

Is this normal for this age? 5th week
