my 150 watt hps only adds $7.00 to my electric bill im paying 6 cents per kw its not bad at all and thats at 18/6 12/12 will drop it even more but now if you go with the 250 or 400 watt lights you will probably be looking at a 20-30 dollar increase

Be prepared to cringe at the cost vs. a comparable output hps. I like them since I grow in boxes and they let me work with extremely limited vertical space, but they aren't very cheap.

so hps would be cheaper then the T5's? if i found an hps that says it draws 150w but puts out 400w are my plants getting ( feeling) 150w or 400 w...??

i think im gonna go cfl...... but a massive amount.... i like them cause they are energy efficiant and they put off no heat.... so i can warm up or cool down if i want i got a cool idea but ill tell later.

YOU SHOULD DIFNINALTY RAISE THE HEIGHT OF THE LIGHTS BECAUSE THERE IS TO MUCH HEAT ON THEM RAISE THEM ABOUT 1- 2 FEET ABOVE THOSE LITTLE ONES, up 2 feet they will still get as much lumens just witout the heat from the lights wiltering them. and mabey take 1 bulb away whille there developing

no they do put off heat
if u get any more than a 60 watt it will put of alot of heat and could cause some minor issues

There is a whole subforum for CFL growing, you should check out some of the things people have come up with in there. CFls can get hot when you have a bunch of them, and some of the crazy setups I have seen with extension cords and duct tape with y-adapters all hanging from strings is just unsafe. Use good logic.

they are getting 400w
!? If a device draws 150w, it can not produce 400w. This would be free energy and is not currently(or probably ever) possible.

That figure is trying to compare the 150w from that fixture with 400w of some unknown lamp. Trust me tho, 150w is 150w. It would be really helpful to know exactly what kind of bulb is in that 150w fixture tho.

check out the 2 light i got at the hardware store for 50 bucks pluse 5 buck plugs the work pretty good i tryed with shop light to the work ok look at my first grow with 65 watt cfl no heat just light its woken so far

im using 5 soft white cfl lights there all kicking out around 1,500 lumens but 2 of those 5 is kicking out 3,000 each there kitchen cfls that u pu tunderneath ur kitchen cupboards to light up the sideboard and there working great.i thought to myself before i started my 2nd grow to not use flouros this time and only use cfl,s all the way through veg and also flowering and im in the 12/12 now to find out the sex of the plants ive got to seperate them when i find out what ones the males are and get rid....the temperature is around 27,c but drops when the lights go out but there are around 6 now thats grown almost up to around 4 sets of leaves and about 4 inches tall ....problem ive got is that i cant close up my growspace properly so its completly dark but im doing my best and i will update from this in a new thread when i get time to do one. this is a just a tip about the lights but im the same i keep looking and not being patient wth them so i reckon that some might turn out male or hermies lets wait n see...im just using compost and watering when dry..miracle grow wil be added after repotting but im in my 3rd week now and going good....

you should difninalty raise the height of the lights because there is to much heat on them raise them about 1- 2 feet above those little ones, up 2 feet they will still get as much lumens just witout the heat from the lights wiltering them. And mabey take 1 bulb away whille there developing

mt tubes put off no heat.........i know i am in there multipul times a day..............i have to run a space heater to keep it over 70...........theyr whilting cause of too much nutes and not enough water.... Thanks though

And lumens are for human eyes not plants.....
Learning fast! Since you're on a roll there the more helpful stat is PAR, or photosynthetically active radiation. Unfortunately you don't find that info on the package of many light bulbs, lol. Lumens are good to compare the relative output of 2 bulbs of the same color spectrumstho, it's not a totally useless figure.

I have a design in my head, i hope it will work........i want to make this biggg asss octagon..( those tht didnt go to school a stopsign shape)........i would figure with that many angles layerd in mylar would make for alot of reflection.........i found some bigg ass cfls... Didnt pay attention to watts.....they are huge!!.....or alot of little ones.......... I want the lights in circles around the plant... Some how make it adjustable.... And for heat im gonna have this bigg tube of lights and my plant on a stand with wire top to sit it all on with a fan underneath blowing upwards inside the tube........ Then for flowering maybe a small hps at the top...............no duct tape or stringss... Im talking screwd lightsockets on plywood..... I hope i will be able to build it!!

that duct tape will fail when your humidity rises..... Ive been through several rolls of tape and said F it and screwd shit on

lumens are for plants , well maybe not exactly , but there is a certain amount of lumens you want to achieve per sq ft

lumens mean nothing to a plant.....people relate to lumens cause they are on the box....... yes more lumens would mean more intesity... but.... measuring lumens is a waist of time.......... its the SPECTRUM OF LIGHT that matters... getting the right colors of the spectrum that benifit the plant is WHAT MATTERS
