What type of soil is good that I can buy at Walmart?

Miracle Grow stuff works well. You have to key the right products to the right plant stages, though -- the normal potting soils are too hot with nutrients for young plants. If you're starting off with clones, may not be important.

The last set of seedling I ran, I put them in 30/30/20 mix of MG seed starter, MG organic (which isn't as hot), and perlite. They loved it.

I use the MG Organic and like it, also Hyponix is available at walmart, its super cheap but you need to add perlite or it tends to compact.

If you have a Lowe's you can get Kellogg Patio Plus soil which is like a low cost version of Ocean Forest. $5 for a 1.5cu.ft. bag or $3 for a 20qt. bag. I also bought a bag of Kellogg compost/mulch made from aged forest products and steer manure for $2.50 for 1cu.ft.

Fox Farm Ocean is hands down the best.

I always thought it didnt matter. I also thought that Miracle Grow was the best. Hey they are the biggest out there, so they must bet the best.. WRONG! Ohh so very wrong.

I had put 10 clones in Miracle grow. Then 3 weeks later put 10 more in Fox Farm (too lazy to go to the store and borrowed a bag from my buddy). Both worked good. And didnt put much thought into it.

2 months later, the ones that I put into Fox Farm were Taller, and much fuller. And they were younger too!!

Now I wont plant without it. Im surprised that nobody else said Fox Farm???

Its not as easy to find as Miracle Grow. But well worth your time. Unfortunately its twice the cost.

From their website, where its sold.

Yup.. not too much Foxfarm stuff at WalMart. If the money is not an issue, you could check your local garden / landscape outfit(s); some of them will carry a wider variety of soils incld. FF

He also said he doesn't have many stores to chose from.

I've gotten a few clones in Ocean Forest and started from seed in MG seed starting mix (used through entire grow). Both are prenuted, one organically and the other chemically, and both grew good herb. Personally, I'll never be spending money on Fox Farms anything because there are too many realistically priced alternatives.

Miracle grow regular is fine just make sure and mix with perlite/vermic or it will burn.. the organic i have twice had bags that had RIDICULOUS amounts of bugs in them.. just swarming inside the soil.. threw those away, never had bug problems with their regular though. I've read of other people having the same problem with their organic.. i dont want to microwave it cus then it kills all the good shit too. Why bother then.. drive the extra 20 mins to the hydro store and get some ocean forest! Why are you not willing to do that?

Half ocean forest and half happy frog is king.

Nobody should ever buy anything at Walmart, no matter how much money they think they're saving. That company is pure evil.

Was at the big box today for tomatoes and peppers and came across "Jungle Growth" organic potting soil. Bought a 1.5 cubic foot bag for $7; enough to fill 4 2-gal pots. Nice looking stuff; we'll see how it does.

Almost done with my first grow and used MG potting soil and I am very pleased. Just stay away from moisture control shit. I accidentally used it for my one plant and it really messes up my watering schedule! For grow 2, I am going to try out the fancy stuff like a Fox Farms or something and see what the real difference is.

i like how everyone assumes theres a hydro store near other people. i can drive 20 minutes,30 minutes shit probably even 45 minutes in ANY direction and not find a hydro store. there are things called rural areas ;).

Driving to a hydro store is a good way to pick up a trace, too, if you live in certain places.
