i have an idea, how about you libs drink your silly little sugar free drinks and leave the rest of us alone.

these stupid, small minded do-gooders should be banned. i am pretty sure i can figure out when my kid needs some soda. i dont need mayors and school superintendants telling me.

meanwhile their cities are going broke but thank god they banned sweets....dicks.

Child obesity is higher here than anywhere in the world. You might be able to manage your kid's consumption but it seems that most cannot. The Pentagon is claiming that the obesity problem may soon affect national security.

The problem is, most parents aren't teaching children nutrition. Most of those parents are overweight themselves. Maybe we should shut down all food and drinks at schools and require kids to bring their own from home? I certainly don't see this a liberal or conservative issue.... it's not about politics at all.... it is about preventing obesity and heart disease and diabetes, strokes, etc....

I don't really support the schools taking the decision from the parents but at the same time Obesity is becoming a huge problem in our society. By the time I was a sophmore in HS (I graduated in 08) the schools replaced all the soda and candy vending machines with fruit juice and health bars and shit, I cant say it was a terrible decision.

I think better solutions could have had to do with getting the parents involved and educated - as an educator, show parents what you see kids eating every day - maybe distribute a list of alternatives to sweets (like fruits) and soda (milk, it would help a lot if schools served 2% instead of watery ass 1%).

But to force the issue feels like an overstepping of bounds between educator and parent.

keep drinking that corn sugar. after all, it's the same as regular sugar...... only worse for you and cheaper to produce....

when i was in highschool if you were thirsty you had to go to the water fountain..... this whole having 10 vending machines on campus?? nope. you ate at the cafeteria or you starved.... they didn't offer sodas at lunch either, and the detrimental effect it had was i developed a tasted for iced tea......

Who says a school has to provide any sugary drinks? They can get rid of everything except water if that will please the one's upset about pulling corn sugar out of schools... Why should your child waste $1.25 or $1.50 on a drink you can purchase in bulk for much less. People that want their kids drinking that stuff can send them to school with it.

But wait, not offering all of the colas and energy drinks in vending machines affects my Constitutionaly guaranteed RIGHTS don'tchaknow. I think it is sad indeed that people are so brainwashed by consumerism and coprorate intent that they actually believe it is their Constitutional right to have a selection of soft drinks at their disposal or extra salt in their french frys or transfat in their chicken nuggets.

What do you mean my 215 pound 16 year old is obese!?!?! How DARE You!?!?! Give him back his 12 Mountain Dews a Day, it's his birth right!

Adults that think like that and the ones calling for sodas in schools are doing children a huge disservice.

this thread embodies a core issue with american society.

our school system is lagging behind other less devoloped nations'...

and we're here arguing about drink selection at the schools.....

like if that really had some sort of impact on student performance......

let's not worry about class size...

over-worked and under appreciated teachers???? screw them...

my kid needs his soda... lol....

I didn't they had to support sugary drinks, sorry if there is any confusion with that.. I was talking about how at my old HS they switched out the vending machines from soda to juice. The only thing I'm against is that if a parent sends their kid to school with a meal and then the school says they cant have said meal (say it's a sandwich, chips and soda). The Chicago story was talking about how the principle banned sack lunches... That's taking the decision from the parent - something I have a hard time justifying in this case.

let me explain something to ya...

apparantely giving kids the option of buying soda and potato chips results in kids buying soda and potato chips for lunch, which makes them fat.

there is a proportionately larger portion of high school kids who are fat, than there were 20 years ago.

high school isn't all that different, except that budget cuts have forced schools to focus on standardized test scores, than on exceptional person-building... that's another subject for another time, we're focusing on the drinks.

so there's millions of kids out there who are bypassing the questionable cafeteria food (let's be realistic), which while sort of healthy is sometimes gross, for some potato chips. problem is that it makes them UNHEALTHY AND FAT...

take the potato chips and soda out of the school and we might find that kids will loose weight.... but doing nothing about it is just giving up on our kid's chances of having a great, healthy life....

I don't see how a child eating a candy bar is hurting any other children. No Victim , no reason to ban anything. Freedom is hard.

You think when these kids go home they are going to eat healthy because you took away their lunch? No, they will binge eat the fuck out of the junk they have at home. Things will get worse and people will be less free. Government cannot and should not ever make personal choices for people.

Don't kid yourself, tests and studies have shown what sugar does to kids.... they get an immediate sugar jolt then they come crashing down, easily distracted, sleepy, etc.... I'd say it might very well have an impact on their performance. Good nutrition is important. Send them to school with soda for breakfast and see how long they last....

You are missing the point.... since we do we trust kids to make decisions that are good for them? Because we don't agree with your sentiment we are 'idiots'? Who is really the idiot here?

a child eating a candy bar doesn't hurt anybody. that child eating a few candy bars a day instead of lunch, that hurts the child...

this idiotic conservatism will soon have you arguing yourself into lunacy...

"why should my kid have to study for history, he fails every test anyways!!!! i want him to learn about math, that school is infringing on my right to decide what my child learns!!!!".... lol...

No one guaranteed you the freedom to select from sugary corn syrup drinks while in school.... to analyze this and toss the word freedom into the mix is pretty silly... Just because they may go home and eat junk doesn't mean we should throw up our hands and forget teaching nutrition.... How do you teach kids to eat responsibly yet offer junk with zero nutritional value for sale at a profit? And that fat kid with the candy bar.... no victim? What about himself or his future kids or family if he contracts heart disease or diabetes... obesity is not a victimless crime... it is a disease... I'm sure there are just as many parents happy that their kids can no longer get that junk in school.
