Fdd2blk Spring Glass Showcase

ENDLSCYCLE

i start with a rod of clear about 1/2 an inch in diameter. i heat one end and form a "gather", which is simply a hot ball of glass on the end. as it melts it naturally wants to pull into itself and turn round, as it's spun. by sticking just the end into the flame and spinning a ball will naturally form on the end of the rod.

once this ball is hot a fluid i flatten it against a graphite pad. this forms a "maria". which is basically a flat disc on the end of the rod.

once i have my maria i write RIU on it backwards using a thin piece of colored rod.

once the letter is laid down i slowing heat it and melt it into the clear while hanging it somewhat downward and spinning it. the colored rod is "heavier" in density then the clear so it moves slower. it will hold in place as the clear melts down and around it, slowly dragging it with it.

you have to heat a little, then push it back flat a little, then heat a little, ....

they call this "imploding". it is a really neat technique with almost endless possibilities.

:eyesmoke:
Good explanation on the technique!!!
Keep it up!!!

Hey FDD this may be a stupid question. BUT.

How bright and vivid can you get the colors in the glass after it's all cooled down?

I ask because I never see any neon, or just BRIGHT colors in general in glass.. though I do see some glass that contrasts especially well. Like Pussymoneyweed's bowl and dish!

it comes in all these colors, ..... http://www.dichroicimagery.com/index.php?cPath=424_423

some of them are harder to work with then others. the coolest looking ones are usually the hardest to use. i use a lot of "momkas, glass alchemy and northstar".

I have to agree on that green slide being absolutely amazing. I'm interested, let me know if available...

You have any that look like a galaxy or something along those lines?

Maybe you could partner with someone that makes hemp necklaces and you could provide the glass for the necklaces.

Ah nice, I'd have a hard time letting the good ones go too haha. I love me some galaxy marbles. If you ever have a minute and wanna snap a picture or two of some you've done that would be awesome. I'd love to check em out =D
