Web Design Software - Who's Got A Recomendation

When my plan expires, I'm going to Media Temple.

Host Gator is pretty decent, but there are better out there. I originally chose HG because they are one of the very few hosts that allow MP3/file sales/downloads from their clients sites. Surprisingly most hosts prohibit that.

ipage/fatcow = bad host, Pacifichost = very bad, Justhost = actually quite good, but no sales via download allowed, Godaddy = overrated and not any good, Yola = decent for small sites, but lacking too many features and support sucks (not that I really need it), Wix = cool for small sites that require flash.

Those are all the ones I have used.

Yeah that's why I edited to say it must be their VPS plan. When your plan is up I would suggest looking at other VPS providers because there are a bunch that blow them out of the water now. I only suggest HostGator to clients that are inept at maintaining a server.

it's all how you look at productivity

somebody wants to sit down and type up 100,000 lines of code, go ahead.

i know kids 18 years old that'll do it faster, easier, and most of all CLEANER, using some of the software already mentioned.

i'd put my money on it...
I'd put my career on it. There's no web design software out there that creates clean and semantic code, especially that takes into account all the quirks that come along with cross browser compatibility. No self respecting developer would use a WYSIWYG. Maybe a designer, but even that's stretching it recently. I'm not going to sit here and say I never have because we all learn somewhere, but after awhile you'll learn that they're just as limiting as they are productive.

Great choice. I absolutely love Media Temple. I have a bunch of their stickers on my macbook because they used to be my primary host. I now host with Linode. Can't beat their VPS pricing. I love their one click deploy. Basically pick your linux distro (they're linux only which is fantastic), pick your hd size and swap size (based on how much you have in your plans, and/or extra space purchased) and click deploy. Within 10 seconds you can ssh in and start managing your server. They just recently introduced a $20/mo (!!!! holy shit !!!!) load balancer. Basically a good VPS that sits between your requests and your servers and picks the best server depending on your balance strategy. Compare that to like rackspace where you'd be paying $100+ /mo for a similar load balancer. It's comparable to some hardware balancers that start at around $1500+ for purchase, though the hardware stuff is generally much better for obvious reasons.

@ Brandon: The company I work for owns their own data center, but they don't give us discounts, so I go with HostGator because they're cheaper. lol. Never tried Media Temple, do you know how much do they charge for extra IP addresses?

@ShadyStoner: Best of luck, man. :)

shit I really dont. I only ran media temple for myself, not my customers. That sucks you don't get discounts on the datacenter. I'd love to have a dedicated rack (one day!), or at least colocation.

As much as I love MT, check out http://linode.com. I fucking love them to death. Extra IP addresses are $1/mo. The thing I like about linode is they take care of their customers. In the year I've had them they've bumped all plans ram twice (no extra charge) and recently bumped storage 8% since they celebrated their 8th year in business (also for free). All upgrades are for all plans forever.

You also get to pick which datacenter you want your server in. Which is also awesome. I made sure my VPS and my Amazon cloud services were as close as I could get them. I've never needed support but from what I've read from friends and other customers they're super helpful. They're very big in the Rails community and also the start up community.

why not link, then pm you for the affiliate code?

edit: I'm guessing it's shared hosting, since you made a point to say they allow ssh access? Do you have a list of large sites/applications they host? What datacenter do they work/rent out of? What's the connection going into and out of the datacenter? Are they PCI compliant? What security measures do they have in place at the datacenter?

I'm really not trying to be a smart ass. These are a few (of a shit load) of questions I ask before I move to a new host.

and I'd like to know more about them, which is exactly why I posted my questions. The spam comment was a joke, I don't know you but I'm willing to bet with 1400 posts your not a spammer. relax. Again. I'd like to know more about said host. Will you post up some information, or are you wasting my time.

I have web hosting software, basically I could essentially set up my own hosting if I wanted to. I also have multi-seller shopping cart software, kinda like Volusion.

I do web design for people (that's my actual job, work from home, I love it :D ), and have a good amount of cool programs.

Abstracting hosting through software ends up in headaches. If you are going to bother hosting, nothing beats Apache or Nginx with a good virtual host file setup. Plus it's not really worth the cost. To be worth a shit, you'd need to either rent/buy or colocate a server. Any local broadband company won't be able to match the tier that a good datacenter is on. Best bet for hosting clients is a VPS or even a reseller account.

That's why I never really pursued anything with it, my hands are full with what I already do. But I do have the programs if someone else wants to start their own hosting company, more than likely though I'd just recommend reseller hosting to them.

I'm so confused on what's happening right now. I'm always looking at hosts, anyone who can beat the specs and price of the server I'm on is a win. It's not much of a hassle, not for me anyway since I'm the only one on my server. I just back it up, purchase a new host, apply my backup, and then set up my DNS. The urls will never change, that's not how DNS works. I've just never seen anyone be secretive about a hosting company. If they're not worth posting here, then I'm not interested.

Would be interested on collaborating on a project? Also do you have a portfolio? I'd love to check it out. Even if you don't feel like helping with a design, I would like someone I could bounce ideas off of. It's (it and a few other projects we could discuss) revolve around cannabis, so I can't exactly ask a lot of my peers. Is it cool if I pm you?
