Looking for a new guitar, what's good these days?

I used to own an american strat, an epiphone sg, and an epiphone les paul. Started with the strat way back as a young teen plugged right into an old marshall hand-me-down. Never really knew much about pedals or any kind of effects, just liked to play a lot. But I sold pretty much all of my belongings when I moved into my first place just to have as much extra money in savings as possible. I've been thinking about grabbing something new up but it's been so long since I've picked up a guitar that I don't know what I should go with this time around.

I'm not looking to spend any real cash on one, nothing crazy (I'm thinking $800 max, excluding cost of amp). Some of the mexican fenders don't sound too bad, neither do most of the epi's.. But I have been enjoying looking at the gretschs, nice sound and look; plus good prices.

Got any other recommendations? Let's hear it.

I mean, if you're like me, a hollow body is nice. I don't know what you're looking for. A Rickenbacker 335 semi-acoustic is for me. Nice sound. Wood type, hollowness, and types of pick-ups are my deciding choices.

I'm not really into hollow body guitars, one of my ex's used to play an epi casino and i didn't really care for it too much. Too big for my taste.

Gibson SG's play like butter.

Yeah my epi sg was fun to play around with, I'm looking for something different than the usual fender/gibson though.
Kinda want to shy away from what everyone else is playing.

These fuckers have some pretty good guitars for the price, I'm thinking about getting one myself. Seem to be decently constructed, have good pickups and shit. The bodies are all the usual Fender/Gibson and a few Rickenbacker and Ibanez knock-offs.

They even sound pretty good.

Very cool, I've never heard of an agile before. They do sound real nice though.

I've been checking out this gretsch pro jet, really like the look and sound for the price.

Has a real nice bluesy sound too:

Actually I take back that bluesy part, It does have the sound but not really as strong as I thought (had to give a second listen).

Aw, I really wanted the limited edition Emily Strange SG, but the only one I could get in my budget my mother wouldn't let me buy because she didn't trust the site!!

I know you've had an Epiphone SG (I has an Epiphone les Paul) but it might be worth going for a Gibdon SG, or Kimbara, they have a lovely feel, tone, and they're beautifully crafted for a 'budget' guitar.

I have an original 76 gold top. I wouldn't sell it for anything :)
Also having a humming bird, my Dad has a few original strats aswell.

My daddy bought me a Squier Bullet, but it's an odd one. Korean- I believe it's late 80's, with an E7 serial number and strat-style headstock rather than the early tele-style. One volume, one tone, no tremolo or pickguard, but this guitar has passed through alot of hands and I've never seen someone else with the exact same model, so it's special to me. Just needs tuning every half hour of play.

buy some machine heads for it....they came with cheap tuning heads...maybe a new bridge..Squiers are decent axes for the loot, plus when you buy upgrades for a guitar you can alwasy take em off and put em on a new one when you dont want the Squier nomore

why not just pick up new set of chrome pegs (and some new strings since you might as well change them then) and fix the problem?

edit: yeah like dizzle said, i call them pegheads though.

And chrome hardware is pretty cheap to come by so she should be able to find something.

Would sure beat the hell out of going out of tune every 30 minutes.

I'll have a look with my daddy. *searches* here's also a music shop across the street I could get some advice and hands-on testing in.

Holy crap. The ONLY picture I could find on my baby on the internet. THere were two similar ones but they came with a tremelo arm. All the other ones have a pickguard or the tele stock.

Yeah, I've gotten used to the tuning thing, but it's not so so good for outside the bedroom 0_0

The jack input might need replacing too- it fuzzed on me at performance once so I literally ran off stage, 'borrowed' a guitar and yelled 'whoever's guitar this is, I love you' and went on with the set. I gave it back afterwards and the lady who owned it was really buzzed about it X3

Exactly! Fun to play with though, but I borrow alt of guitars. Nothing I own and play regularly has a tremelo arm, but the Epiphone seems to stand up well to bending. Well, maybe because it's a little girl bending lol.

EDIT: Ganjames, sorry for the total thread-jack! Stopping now x
