Chopping off Fan leaves

Ok I'd like to know when i should cut some fan leaves. I have a couple that are covering some pre flowers and would like to know if i should pick the fan leaves off to give the flowers more light or what everyone else would recommend. I know some people believe they shouldn't cut anything on the plant and some people believe the flowers need more light so they chop em off. Let me know! Thanks

Don't listen to this guy he's from canaduh and grows beaster. Tim it up a little if it looks like it may need it to open room for light, nothing too big of course.

Try tucking fan leafs 1st. Don't cut if at all possible, these leaves are the engine of your plant, without them your flower production will be hampered. I did some heavy pruning on my 1st scrog and it slowed the grow down by at least 1 wk, and I know it hurt my final yield.

If you can try and tie down the fan leafs that are blocking new growth.

What kind of lights are you using? If your using hps then you shouldn't worry to much because they penetrate leafs pretty well. If you are using CFL then you should tie the bigger leafs down or to the side to get more light to the new growth.

Photosynthesis is not specific to individual leaves, it benefits the entire plant. A bud site will not grow any better if you trim a fan leaf that is shading it. Those big fan leaves are the solar panels for the plant and every time you trim one off you are reducing the amount of light the plant can absorb. If a fan leaf is laying on a bud or against another leaf, there is a chance it will trap moisture between them causing he leaf to be unable to transpire and invite mold. In this case, if you can't move the leaf aside then it is better to trim it than to allow it to cause potential problems. Also, on occasion you may need to do a small amount of trimming to allow better airflow throughout the plant. Otherwise leave leaves alone!

As long as you use common sense while growing, it's hard to really mess up your plant. Remember, it's a weed. Look at what tumble weeds and all those other weeds can endure and still thrive. These plants are much more resilient than people give them credit for, lol. You can trim about 10% a day for 5 days straight with out doing much harm to your plant.

yeah right ! and is that gonna do 10 % benifit to the rest of plant each time ?
calm down, I understand that people have different opinions on what is acceptable to do to your plant and what isn't. The truth is, removing a fan leaf or two occasionally isn't going to kill your plant or reduce your production by 50%.

If you have the perfect set up, with more than enough HPS or MH lighting, a great fan system, good intake and exhaust, then you probably wont need to remove any fan leafs. If you are growing with something like CFL that doesn't penetrate the leafs then removing some fan leafs is just fine. Sure you lose out on a big leaf to collect light with, but whats the point of having all fan leafs and no decent bud?
