HPS lighting question

Are HPS lights noisy? How much noise would you get from a 150 watt HPS like this:

Does the ballast make a difference?

There is a little hum from the ballast...at least my 150watt hps lights hum...I'd imagine all ballasts hum a little bit

I have the very same unit as the link that you showed, and I have had no more noise than a low humming sound that quites after the light bulb gets charged up fully.

As for the ballast making the dif, for that answer I will leave that to a more qualified RIU Member ...

Thanks man, I may just get some of those 150 watt killer cfls so I can change the spectrum. A single spectrum doesn't make sense to me.
I can get one for about $29

No matter what type of light you use, your fan(s) will make more noise.

The price of that light has dropped lots! I just wrapped up my funds on 2x http://www.htgsupply.com/Product-7-Band-135w-UFO-LED.asp I have learned not to beleive the comparison from the LED makers though, a 90w led is NOT The same as a 400HPS. a 90w LED would be the same as the HPS you are looking at but not much more if more. I figure one 135w LED in middle of ea 4x4 area of mine is like a 250hps but it aint nowhere close to the stated comparison of a 600w hps. good luck.

They are extremly quiet, I have a 400w hps in my closet and my little 6in fan is way louder, doors open or closed. I would imagin a 150w to be even quited just because less current would be flowing.

My digital 600 watt and my magnetic 400 watt ballasts are about as loud as 2 bumblebees..lol... Thats all i can compare them to at the moment...

Hydrofarm makes a 150, but I haven't used it. I imagine it's not a huge amount of light, though. No matter how small your garden.
For something in that wattage and price, you might do better with a CFL setup.
