What's the appropriate way to handle this kind of situation...?

So I'm at work this afternoon and a couple came in asking about getting wireless internet put on the computer they just bought from goodwill. I lead them to the wireless internet adapters we have in the shop, explain how they work and everything and stand there talking to them for maybe 5 minutes, everything is cool at this point.

Then he sees behind me on the shelf that we have a wireless XBOX360 headset, normally priced at $49.99 (which the product itself is priced at with it's own little product tag), priced at $24.99, because it slid over above the wired headset price tag. So he trips! Goes on about "is that really that cheap?! Let me see that!". So I tell him "oh, sorry somebody must have just priced it wrong, I'm pretty sure it's more expensive than that.." while I look at the tag, confirm the price and tell him. Then he says "weeeeell, I want it for that price right there..", so again, I tell him, "I can't give it to you for that price, somebody just must have made a mistake and priced it wrong, it's actually $49.99" "yeah but I want it for that price right there" so I took the tag off the shelf, didn't read it (which I should have) and threw it away, again saying the same thing, mistake, sorry. He gets really upset, at this point I think he realized I wasn't going to cut him any kind of deal, does this weird angry but pretending to joke about being angry so if anyone tries to tell him anything about his attitude he was only kidding, and tells me that I'm supposed to honor whatever the shelf tag says because he's a consumer and that's what they did at Best Buy. I ask him "where does it say that?" "say what?" "that I have to honor what the shelf tag says if it's a mistake?", then the woman he was with said they did it at Best Buy, at this point I was thinking "go to Best Buy and ask for deals then, it doesn't say that here, at this business". At this point I'm more than willing to argue with this guy because he's just escalating the whole situation stating things that don't make sense. My manager overhears this going on from the back and comes up front to mediate between us. The guy complains to him and insinuates I'm RACIST! "I didn't come in here lookin' for no deal, what, because of the way I look?" I flipped my shit at that point inside my head, gave him the look of and stated "dude, are you serious right now? It's 2012! You think I'm racist?" continues making shit up as if he's telling on me to my manager and makes sure to tell me how well he's educated and he could call the better business bureau and get me fired, but the BEST PART is when he tells me "yeah, in here we're all cool we're joking around and everything it's all fun, but outside, you gotta deal with me and the police" or something to that effect, I dont' really remember the exact quote but I took that as a direct threat. On top of which, I would fucking KILL this guy. He's probably 35-40, my height, about 200lbs, I'm 24, 6'2, 175lbs with technique and at this point, pure fuckin' rage on my side. I was actually shaking I was so mad (which has happened probably 5 other times in my entire life).

Anyway, after his threat, I didn't give a fuck anymore and walked away before it went any further. Shit stuck with me the remainder of the day and I'm now writing about it hours later.

Consequently, later I looked up what he said, if I had to honor the shelf tag, and we were both wrong. I would have had to honor it had it been labeled as the wireless headset for that price, I just didn't read it before I threw it away, like a dumb ass.

TL;DR version - guy demands I honor shelf tag, item is priced higher than shelf tag, mistake, sorry, I can't. Guy gets pissed off, inaccurately explains policy, I demand he show me where it states that, manager comes out, guy insinuates I'm racist and threatens me.

So what the fuck RIU?

Yeah he was black.

I've never had somebody actually play the race card like that on me in person, I was fucking shocked! Can't believe people still do that.

some black people are fucking shocking. that whole situation sounds idiotic. he obviously didnt NEED it because he wasnt there to buy it so what the fuck does he care?

my mums friend has west indian origins and shamefully told my mum about the time her west indian mother went on vacation. there was a limit to how much luggage you can bring on like there always is, and she had idiotically brought more. refusing to leave a bag or pay a fine for excess baggage, she played the race card. and guess what, it worked, of course.

fucking bunch of jesse jackson militant cunts

In re the opening question ... as far as i can see there is no situation left to handle. Imo you did very well indeed to walk away, and to do nothing emphatic or hasty while you were furious. cn

I am not taking this guy's side by any means. As a matter of fact, I think certain people should be thrown in jail for using the race card it's such a useless crutch now. BUT, I have worked in retail for about 10 years. And common policy was, "if something is tagged wrong on the floor, customer gets it for that price."

Again, I'm not taking a personal point of view, just what I have experienced in many business practices.

Wow. He wasnt black homie that's a nigger. If best buy did it b4 obviously he's tried to pull it there too and it worked well so he said. Some crackhead shit. Ive had plenty of runins like that sellin dope. But I am racist, I hate everyone. It's a sad world, everyone is getting like that. I'd of told him to get the fuck out. And I have a colored tv.

Ps I love when people have to tell you how smart they are, and how intelligent they are. Usually money comes with those qualities and I know if I was in that sit. ESP if I wasn't looking for somethin wouldnt give a fuck. Pride has no price tag. But usually if something is priced wrong the biz will give it 4 it. But I've had it happen and they said I'm sorry our price is wrong and it's so and so and the offer a consolation prize like a free dollar item. I didn't really care I was going to buy one regardless.

Haha, sounds like a day at Circuit City :-)

We weren't required to honor a price. it was our judgement as Managers to decide if I wanted to. If the customer is polite, they seem like a great potential return customer, they are loyal, etc.. I would def honor a reasonable price change (Nothing like a $700 laptop priced at $7) But if a customer got Irate, I would enjoy NOT giving them the price :-) Hell, if its the last of an Item, I might even raise the price if they really got stupid! I am a pretty big guy, and I have had several threaten me, but never want to meet me outside :-/

What should I do when he comes back in? He comes by maybe once ever 2 or 3 months. I was initially going to admit my mistake and offer an apology, but that was up until he threatened me indirectly like a little bitch. That told me that he's one of those kinds of guys that if I did do that he'd just go run his mouth to everyone he knows about how he "scared that white boy into submission" or some shit. I gave this a lot of thought throughout the day today, and came to the conclusion, in this case, the outcome of an apology is worse than doing nothing. It would inflate his ego even more than it is and he'd be even more of that kind of stereotype. Maybe some day the guy will learn, doubtful though since he's as old as he already is.

i agree on being the bigger man and letting it go but i don't agree with apologizing. All that does is re-affirm this idiots claims imo.
