"Democracy" never has and never will work. The majority are stupid. A candidate could set everyone up in a brand new house on an episode of Cribs, a bathroom I can play baseball in, a king size tub big enough for ten plus me, a credit card that's got no limit, a big black jet with a bedroom in it and a drug dealer on speed dial. All it takes is one hater to convince the mob not to do it. Like Dan said, all candidates won a primary, except Elijah Paul. Over half the population wants marijuana legal, but a vast number of those vote for the candidates against it. Those same people will give the excuse it's only one issue. Over enough time those single issues add up. People will vote their own execution, given the right spin. Look at Socrates.

It still wasn't working when I voted for Dubbya four times. 2004 was the last time I voted. Not voting for over seven years has saved enough gas so I could eat out a few delicious meals.
My only reward for voting was jury duty. I just told them straight up, I won't make a good juror and will only vote guilty for any trial I'm on. I was dismissed after six hours the first day. The only reason I showed at all was the sherif came to my door. I was told they'd neber pick me again.

and by the way, the house voted 395–28 to sanction him after the evenly divided house panel on ethics decided he did in fact break house rules...hardly a partisan conspiracy...
