heat problems are ruining my day

i tried saving a little money while constructing my room but i think i'm paying for it now. i have a 400 watt hps light in a room thats roughly 90 cubic feet. i have air intake(don't know the cfm) and i have exhaust thats only 70 cfm. i think thats probably the main problem. with the door closed it can get up to 100 degrees in there but i'm thinking about putting in a 400 cfm exhaust fan. please give me your opinion on if you think this will solve my problem or if there is sumthing better i could do. :confused: :confused: :confused:

how good do cool tubes work? i'd be willing to invest in one if i knew it would work well but the idea of even more exhaust tubes gives me a head ache

Well... I'm new to indoor gardening..... so my help will be basic at best.

Based on my trial runs..... I'm going to have the same problem with heat.... ...I'm not going to bother with trying to build something on my own... I'm going to buy one of those $300.00 A/C units that stand alone. (They DON'T go in a window... they are just stand alone). I realize it's going to take a lot of power to run.... but I'm reducing power everywhere else in my home where I can.

WalMart carries these A/C for $250 to $350 depending on the size you want.

I know others here have some good plans for DIY room coolers... so maybe one of those would be better for you.

Does the house have central AC? If so you might consider tapping into the ducting and have a little cold air cooling the grow space.


From what you described, you have what's called positive air pressure in the grow room, meaning you have more air coming in than going out, in a computer, positive air pressure is what you want. In a grow room, it's also ok, but not ideal.

You should consider a cooltube like others have suggested, you can get one for $79 with a reflector wing included for that price. Going the cooltube route is one of the easiest ways to deal with HID lighting heat, then just vent the cooltube out of the growroom and call it a day, problem solved. 100* is to hot, especially if your not using c02. If I was in your shoes, I'd pick up a cooltube, or even a normal air cooled reflector hood, then simply vent the heat.

i could tap into the central air but that would only work in the summer while the AC is on.. i would think it would probably be even worse in the winter while the heat is on.

but ya i think a cool tube may be the only solution. i'll probably have to get one from HTGsupply though since thats where i got the 400 HPS

i just cant believe 400 watts is givin me this much trouble

I have a 10000 btu roll around portable ac w/ remote and timmer well worth 400.00 I also have 36 cubic cab w/ 1000 hps the temp maintains 70 degrees.

After reading many threads man, you do need a cool tube. I haven't even set up my room and I knew there would be no way around it. I'm going to fool around with a 1000hps just hit up my journal if u want to see how I do soon enough.

good luck man, let us know how it does and how much does the tube drop your overall temp.

You could use this method backwards, to your advantage. Buy a cooltube and vent it in the off A/C unused ducting, come summer, reverse the situation when the A/C is being used, and then use the cold air coming into the room, you could get a vent register booster with a fan in it to suck more cold air than the other rooms, The Mcguyver method is to just slap a 120mm ac or dc fan to the opening into the duct with some velcro :)

Couple things to mention: If your blowing your grow room heat into the A/C duct, do yourself a favor and get a active charcoal can filter, you probably can get away with a smaller one. You don't want there to be any smells while pushing away your hot air that may
smell, also come summer when the A/C is used, just figure out where to vent the cooltube.

If you have an intake for the fresh air and an exhaust for the hot air in place than you just need bigger fans. I use a 400cfm fan on my 5x5 closet. Its overkill but the temps are within 5 degrees of the outside room and Im running two 400w MH lamps in a small space.

Perhaps they could run the main lamp(s) at "off-peak" times?

That should at least lessen the heat, not to mention the elec bill.

i think i'm just gona see wich i can do cheaper
put in better intake and exhaust or install a cool tube
but i think i'm leanin towards the cool tube. i would think that would eliminate the problem at its source.
