abandonconflict was dead right about conservatism coinciding with being a dullard.

in case you didn't notice, reagan slashed taxes back when he took office. the only since to do any real raising of taxes was clinton (bush sr. just barely). then shrub cut them back again significantly. guess which two enjoy the most added to the debt?
I'm just going off of YOUR "continued policy" suggestion.

Funny how if anything remotely resembling something good happens in America, it's all because of OBAMA.
Then if something doesn't go OBAMAS way, it's the fault of ANYBODY BUT OBAMA. (sometimes still Reagan's fault:roll:)
Then if somebody raises this fact, said person is usually branded dumb, or better yet, racist.

I'm sure that you'll find us all a study with a pretty graph that tells me I'm wrong.

your being dead wrong can be attributed to Reagan by these 5 points........

a good amount of that was taxes already taken out during the course of the year, but i still owed about $60. i would have gotten about $80 back, but i was unable to claim the standard deduction so that my wife could take itemized deductions on her state return (which i imagine would net her more than i lost).

so in all reality, my real tax liability was about $140 if i took the standard deduction. but that's still $140 on someone living below the poverty line.

i should have mentioned we have no sales tax here, maybe it would have made it easier to believe for you. i can take pics of my return if you really don't believe me.
Personally, I would rather have a sales tax than an income tax but you choose to live in that state so I cannot sympathize. How much did you send to the IRS for your sub $10,890 income?
Other than bitching about having to pay anything on such a low income, my question was, what do I get for that? Except for contributing to system that makes my life more difficult and dangerous?

you would prefer a sales tax? lol.

if i paid 5-8% on everything i purchased last year, my liability would have been much higher than the alternative.

what do you get for your tax dollars? oh, nothing at all.

I don't know I like that idea about getting rid of income tax. If we only had sales tax that would be a flat tax for everyone. With low % rates for exception like food, health, insurance...ect "what you need"that would be great. Higher %rates on entertainment, electronics, services , essentially everything that is not a "need" but a "want". It would tax the rich more because they are the ones buying all the luxurys in mass quantities. Hopefully it could deter someone from buying a boat who really cant afford it, and help prevent debt.

It would't be a flat tax if you had different sales taxes on different items!

Once again, let's punish the rich.

the rich doesn't have to buy luxuries if they don't want to.. but when they buy food and insurance they will get the same rate.

I don't know about the flat tax, seems it woud become abused like the rest of tax systems. How about getting rid of all the wasteful crap government spends our money on and then we lower taxes for everyone. We could start in Congress by making their retirement social security, most of these people have personal fortunes of their own yet they reap huge retirement benefits compared to the average American, when they are already wealthy to begin with.

Also it is still a flat tax, you think one dimension not my problem. If everyone is paying the same price for the same product & there are no loop holes [ex) well since you buy so much i will lower it for you but that guy over there still pays full] then it is a flat tax. Flat in that rates don't change, like their derivative is zero.

You have heard of something called the "luxury tax" I presume.

In a lot of instances the "rich" are already paying higher taxes for buying "extravagent" things.

Different sales tax rates for different items based solely on the fact of "need", is NOT a flat tax.

As far as state tax goes, yes. I used to live in Texas which has no income tax. That worked better for me. If I buy something other than food, I pay the same as everybody else. But then I am not trying to redistribute the wealth.

if i paid 5-8% on everything i purchased last year, my liability would have been much higher than the alternative.
Well, then, as long as you're happy...

Thank you.

This is comparing apples and tires. You have a partner with a job. I live on my income ONLY. How many people can live on $900/mn in the US without getting some assistance, either from family, charity or government?
So... what was your IRS bill?

WTF?
Everybody pays the same sales tax rate NOW. Yes, if you buy in bulk, you get a discount on the units(from the retailer, not the tax man).
You talk like the stores lower tax rates if bought in bulk. Stores can't adjust sales tax rates, but they can lower the prices!

my partner lives on investment income, actually. $900/month is doable but you have to live in the right area to do it.

i made less than the standard deduction last year, you tell me what my IRS bill was.
