Cfl Proximity To Foliage

Garden Knowm

Hey Garden Knowm thanks for the info. I'm trying to figger out why a person would want/need to veg longer or shorter if the plant is going to be the same size when it matures? Guess what I am driving out is whut is gained or lost by variations in the veg time? Apparently it aint got nothing to do with the finshed size of the plant at least as concerns the 5 to 10 inch flowering start. Also I have a floursecent tube shop light. Got no idear as to the lumens..wattage..kelvins etc. Wonder if it would hurt or help to stick in in the grow room? Thinking maybe I could slip it under the plants to shed a little light on the underside. This is after they get mo bigga of course. They are still just babies right now. Whatcha think?

The more LIGHT you have, the longer you can veg, and the larger your yield will be..

If you are using CFLs... no reason to VEG for 4 weeks unless...
1 - you are going to add side lighting
2. you need a shit load of clones
3. your plants and some PH or nutrient issues

and probably a few other reasons I have not thought of.. bt you catch my drift...

BUT... if you have 1000 watts of HPS... on a light mover and you are only growing 2 plants... then you may want to veg for 6 weeks... and really grow some monsters..... The light will give you decent penetration and if you space the plants out.. you can probably get 4-8 ounces per plant..

The INNER workings, or inner area of a BUSHY plant never gets light... the sun can not even penetrate a bush..... ANYTIME you walk by a bush... even if it is 15 feet in diameter and 15 feet tall.... if you peel back a few branches, you will notice that only the outer 2-4 inches is actually green foliage and the rest of the bush.... is BROWN stick, absent of foliage...

My point being.. it can be difficult to get big yield from a big plant.. unless you have adequate light for the entire surface area... and forget about the center....

Hey Bird,

Doesn't the foliage get burned when it grows into the CFLS?

cheers

thanks for the pics!
Dear Knowm,
Yeah it does burn some, but the plants seem to have brains. They touch the hot bulb then seem to stay a safe distance back. Then the plants grow around the tall bulb. It is a strange phenomenon. Anyway, a little leaf damage occurs, but a huge amount of light goes into the side leaves. Consequently, nearly all the lumens seem to be used. So, long story short, use less lumens on top and stick some side light into the equation.

WOW.. great info.... I don't mind minor burn at all. as long as the burns are less than the size of a dime I give them no thought.. the benefits of having the light close far out way small burns... only when using CFLs... with HIDs, burns should be taken much more seriously...

I am anxious to experiment with plants growing around lights. that is really cool.. more pictures would always be appreciated :)

ok.
I understand that you want the bulb as close as possible to the plant for maximum growth, etc.

But does lumens not come into play also?

My question is........
If a 43 watt cfl is 1 inch away form a plant.
And a 250 watt cfl is 6 inches from plant.

Would the performance be approximately the same for each plant?
or
Do you still need the 250watt cfl 1 inch from plant to perform the same?
Yes, ive got a 130watt spectrum cool daylight, 6400k, So how far am i supposed to put my plants away from that?

Thanks for the great conversation and tips. Will say that Mockingbird is a sharp cookie too I just noticed the phenomenon he mentioned about the CFL's and the leaf burn. Just yesterday I scorched the snot out of some leaves on my baby (think he might be a baby boy I aint sure) with one them screw tail 100 W. CFL clamp lights. Turned near one whole side brown. Shut it off..and today the plant has plumb healed itself. Its a muracle. Kindly keep up all the interesting palaver.

i have 1 18inch girl on 12/12 3wks with a 125w ecobloom cfl with reflector, wen this was bought in a HEAD SHOP i was told it would do from start to finish,i used LST for vegging it & it work really really well, but got too bushy for my space & had to untie it,now that its untied i had to take all the lil branches off just too get any decent buds, has any1 else been misled by headshops like i was??? I only recently found this site & its been a wealth of knowledge & good advice

I am two weeks into my first grow (closet)...I got 2 seeds of a feminised strain called shaman from the dutch passion seed company...its a hybrid of skunk #1 and purple #1. I also planted a seed found in an O of kush and its doing stronger than any of the rest. its already bushy and has a good 4 full sets of interestingly wide leaves, and is developing another 4 or 5 sets. seems likely to be a lady cuz of the shape from what i understand.

I have a space that is about 3ft wide and 3 feet deep. I would like to keep the plants at a convenient 25 inches tall. I have 4 home made 25 watt cfl fixtures hanging around the plants as well as a 2ft. fluoro "indoor grow light" mounted 5 inches from the tops of the plants(getting ready to install one more of these). Their growth is vigorous since installing the tube grow light. there is also an oscillating fan operating at all times keeping the temp at 74-84F.

GM-a couple questions...what would be the ideal size pots to use in my space and considering my lighting (there is always the option of adding more light using those Y shaped things that hold 2 lights per wire).

Do you think approximately 15 days would be an ideal time to begin flowering? I am at 18/6 for veg and am thinking about trying a technique that begins flowering a little more gradually...cutting the light by 3 hours per week rather than immediately going to 12/12. and i shouldn't make the days any shorter than 12 hrs, correct?

Im also trying to plan ahead to deal with any smell issues as the space is in a closet...wheres the best bang for my buck?

Thats it for now. I like to do things right, so all the help is GREATLY appreciated Gnowm, as I have learned much from you and our peers over the last few months. Sorry for the overload if anything. I will put up some pics of everything as soon as I can.

Much love,
Nomad

Thanxs 4 the info & I brought ur book Buds 4 Less & my CFL grow is turning out just as u said it would if I follow ur advice step by step & I'll post some pics of it soon, I'm n the 3rd wk of flowering, I have 6 females & I have 6-42w CFL's & I rotate them everyday & the buds r looking just like ur book with the 1- Mango & 2-Blue Dots looked like, so it's a proven fact that CFL's do just a good of a job as HPS & MH, but at a better faction of the cost 4 electricity, so all of u haters out there talk'n abt CFL's ain't shit, I say middle finger 2 all of U!!! Keep it Real Bericus

Here's my 2 cents. Go to your favorite big box store and buy a 20-25 inch, cheap, box fan for $12. Then go to your favorite home supply big box store and find a charcoal furnace filter. At Lowes I bought an odor eater charcoal filter, from 3M, for $10. I used plastic wire ties and attached it to the fan face. To say the difference was dramatic is an understatement. I am not saying this is a perfect solution, but it will be a huge improvement.

thanks a lot mb. i just added a couple more lights and i bought a huge 100W cfl but i need a special socket thats a little bigger than regular light sockets and i cant find one unfortunately. it would make a big difference if i could just use that light! anyway, almost time to flower ; )

Hey there,
Nice tips you got there... I sucessfully grow 2 Bluegod plants with your light setting tips... Thank you, Bro...

I'll be growing dp Blueberry soon...ummm... Can't wait for it...

Oh, actually I have a question for you, Can I grow dp Blueberry strain with that kind of CFL light setting?
Coz I heard that blueberry is quite a bitch to grow with CFL, plus from what I heard, they stretch a lot too... I wonder how I can keep them short...

Thank you...

nb: The pic I posted is the pic from my last grow of Bluegod from Jordan of The islands.

I've been told I could veg on CFL's as long as I like with no negative repercussions.. is this true? Because I'm seeing marijuana creeper vines in my near future.
