If that's the case I can't fathom why she kept the firearms in her house with him there. Even if they were locked up they were obviously not locked up well enough.

He had never showed anything but respect and safety towards guns. He had no history of taking them , had no history of killing anyone.

If your adult son started acting a bit worse over a weeks time, would you remove all the knives from the house?

Her estate will be wiped out by civil suits due to her lack of control of deadly weapons when she well knew the kid was a mental basket case.

Presents an interesting dilema doesn't it.

The gun toting crowd says it isn't the weapons, but it was the lunatic behind them that caused the killings - and if mom had been listened to this never would have happened - so now can we keep our semiautomatics please?

But the civil rights folk are saying "if you let moms legaly put their children away - where will it end?" "sons have rights too, even crazy sons"

Its both civil rights issues. Your right to carry a firearm is a civil right.

so Now either mentally ill people get put in prison forever or we ban all guns, you choose.
Oh wait, have government require 4 weeks mandatory weapons training, a mental health evaluation and make it all voluntary. Those who pass get issued a free CCW carryable everywhere and anywhere Planes, courtrooms, sporting events etc etc etc. My guess is we would actually see a huge DECREASE in intentional violent crime and an increase in accidental shootings. Which would be greater in numbers is undecided.

If you think that way you're just as much of an iresponsable gun owner as she apparently was. I hope that if ever backfires on you as it did her that innocent people won't die because of your idiocy like hers.

If he's mentally ill enough to require mom institutionalizing him he shouldn't be near firearms. She obviously feared him in some way yet left firearms where he could and did gain access.

We spoke of my sister in law locking herself in her room as her husband racked and re-racked his shotgun while hissing that he wondered what her head would look like as a slug passed through it.

For all I know, that restraining order might have saved not only her life but other's as well. But there were many who contended that TRO's should not involve removing weapons from the subject.

Supposedly she was gone 2 days prior to the shooting, leaving her son alone in the house. Adam had to wait for mom to come home to get the key to unlock the guns. I guess Mom should have swallowed the key insted of leaving it where someone could steal it.

Like if your car gets stolen, its your fault for leaving it in such a condition that stealing it was even possible. Don't even try to blame the guy who hot wired it, he is blameless.

I think it was more of she wanted him to lead a normal life than fear. The institutions are supposed to give them life skills training and try to get them to live independently, it doesn't mean he was violent in anyway.

Then again some nuts under pressure crack.

But, but, but .......

There is just no amount of rational talk that would convince you that gun owners should be responsible for THEIR weapons, is there? You clearly have taken the position that you should be able to own as many weapons, and as much ammo as you want, but you have absolutely zero responsibility to properly store and protect those weapons.

It must be nice to go through life not giving a fuck about anyone other than yourself.

Responsibility, yes. But to expect a standard of zero failure is the exact same as demanding a removal of the weapons and weapons rights. cn

It is quite obtuse of you to expect that a gun could never be stolen from anyone as long as the owner took proper precautions.

FYI My post didn't contain one instance of the word 'but'.

Off work!!! Ahhh . So anyway, how does a gun get stolen if the owner took proper precautions?

Are you still trying to make this argument? We blew this out of the water a long time ago, it holds no water and only a fool would continue to try and use it.
