TIP: If you can't afford to buy 20L (5 gallon) grow bags ro buckets...

Is is okay to use 20L bin bag as an alternative to grow in ?

I have my 1st grow in 2.5 gallons (10L) at present 1 one veg (will be transplanting and switching 12/12 tomorrow). You are talking like €15–€25 for a 20L plastic pot in a local shop. Even on the internet it's next to impossible to find something reasonable for a decent price. Growbags are pricey on the net as well if you have, let's say, 10 plants. I was desperate (as I couldn't afford anything bigger) and nearly mentally settled for a defeat, until I got the simplest idea yesterday, and then I thought: "why didn't I think of this earlier?!." I am gonna use 20L bin bag. Now, I am a newbie and should not be giving advices here, and please treat this as such as I haven't tested it yet, so be careful. If you live in Europe, go to Lidl. They sell good, firm bin bags. Make sure you get the 20L one — not only for the size, but the other types are thin, flimsy and not worth a wank.

I will use 2 bags to reinforce it a little. The only thing about that worries me a little if the smell of them. I wonder have they been run through some sort of chemicals. Maybe I'll wash them first. What do you think senior growers? Is it a good or bad idea?

Should perform fine, provided there's decent thickness in these aforementioned " bin bags." Your idea can be likened to scrubbing the toilet by hand with paper towel because a toilet brush was too expensive. It got the skids off, but would you create a poll about it?

For someone who is growing for the first time and has no capital buying the lights, ducting, fans, feeds, soil, vermiculite, seeds....you're talking hundreds of euros, and saving 150-100 euros on pots is quite nice. I don't know about your place where you live, but I can tell you that it's pretty fucking hard to save a few pounds in Europe right now, no jobs, most part-time, and you're glad to cover expenses for living...

Sure maybe I didn't have to create a poll about it, but it's the best way to summerize opinions instead of reading every single post in a thread. Why does it bother so much? Does it waste too much bandwidth on the server? Is there a special rule about polls that only questions like who created the Universe can be asked? If the poll is is gonna be majority positive then a new comer who is not sure whether to use it or not will be confident to do so from the result.

cant afford grow bags? fabric pots are like 50 cents each if u cant afford that your going to run into bigger issues then what to grow in. even my plastic pots were only a couple bucks at the gardening store

I would like to see that. Please send me a link to the online store that ships them worldwide. If it's only your local store than it's no good to the rest of the world. I went to my local garden store (only a town 15,000 people) didn't have them. Went to a bigger store in the county (50,000 population) didn't have them. And when they do they are tomato bags which are 40L (11 gallon). I have not seen bags for 50c personally.

I really wish that people on here weren't such sarcastic snobs!! Do really think that I couldn't afford 50c bag and would go on a forum talking about alternatives?? Of course not, you're just being an ass....Grow up man!! Besides the bin bags would cost more in this case.

Most greenhouses / nurseries and especially those that do landscaping have a mountain of once-used and discarded pots they will gladly give you if you ask nice. All sizes.

Good advise, thank you. But that's only a guess/try with ?% of success. Whatever worked or works for you in your area might not work somewhere else. It's only a lucky try, you cannot rely on that!

Well the thing about landscapers around here, once they plant the containerized plant, they have no use for the container. At least not hundreds and hundreds of them. They throw them away or recycle the plastic. Growers don't want them back for fear of introducing pathogens into their operation.

I don't mean to be throwing off your proposal whatsoever, okay. I respect your experience and what you have come to know. But I tell you what I have come to know also. Where I live, Ireland, in a town. I don't know any landscapers at all, just not on my friends list :D. Here you are left with DIY stores and garden stores, etc. When you are looking for something of that size they don't usually have it on stock and then they ask you what kinda plant you need it for...The more you ask them question, the more they ask you back if they don't have it, not in a mean way, they are just trying to help, but it raises eyebrow. If they have something of that size, the shittest, regular pot is about €12.50 at bets could be €15 or even €20. Maybe the rest of you get it in America for 50 cent or whatnot, but not here, so don't treat me like a buffoon (not you :D , but the other wise guys). Things are very expensive in Europe, especially in Ireland, one of the highest costs of living in Europe. Even slightly higher than UK, I would dare to say. This is one thing that kinda pisses me off about Americans; they always use USA as a reference point. It's only 50 cent....and never check where's the other person from, what's the cost of living there, everything is always based on USA.

I am not at you, AimAim, just used this reply as a proxy. But please people from the states, be more open-minded towards people from other parts of the world. What costs 50c in your town could be a fortune somewhere else.

First of all, I said 150-100. If you wanna quote me, quote me properly at least. I'm telling you, you won't get 10 pots on ebay with delivery for below €100. Go and have a look at ebay.ie or ebay.co.uk. If you are gonna bring up ebay.com than it's gonna be much more, including "import charges" that are always applied when buying from USA, nowhere else btw.

10x15=150
10x25=250

I merely suggested trying to get Home Depot to deliver to Ireland which I think they will....their buckets are cheap as hell....made in the USA so I hope that's not a deterrent for you.
