Go to the Depot and pick up a "sharkbite", they are available in 1/2" through 1" sizes and just slide and lock onto the pipes. Easy Squeezy. They are seven bux or so.

\ when the tail is quarter or so inch long take a toothpick and make a hole for the tail, then bury your germ about 1/8" from the top of the dirt.

Update: 48 plus hours, no predators
