I never paid attention to the drainage, never thought about that being the reason for it not growing but you might be right. I will perform some tests on drainage tomorrow and will give you an update.

If the pH is high peat moss is a great option, I have used composed pine needles and pine bark, got good results. As for the ratios I usually do like 1/3 compost, a bit less than 1/3 for aereation, and the rest is old soil.
