I sometimes got a buzzing sound when the glass of the bulb made contact with the metal of the reflector, but that was easily remedied by bending the reflector a bit, besides that I've gotten the odd faint ringing noise during fire-up but nothing that doesn't just sound like chemicals under pressure warming up. As for heat, with proper ventilation a 400w hps would do famously in an average sized bathroom
