I'm new to RDWC but not to growing, I was under the impression in DWC you keep the PPM around 500 not over 1000.... As far as res changes go I've heard the same as you, to be honest I'm kind of going by conditions in the res, ie: not dis-coloured, no slime > all good. So far I've changed it out...
