Trump tariffs kill progress

Highly doubtful it appears. They are trying to deregulate any check on them so they don't have to spend as much on product safety, or guarding the environment. Just to become richer, because, as I asked Google last month, greed knows no bounds.

Like a headline I just read on news about Tesla. It said something about it's stock rising..., for what reason? It was that rules regarding self driving were being relaxed with regard to accident reporting. It wasn't because Musk and Tesla finally decided that they'd employ lidar, along with cameras to make them safer. It allows for more accidents ffs. Musk doesn't give a flying f*ck about who gets hurt. It's all about the money. So, he can put more dangerous cars on the road, and just eliminate a huge expense, human drivers.

At any rate, it's the people on the margins who will be hurt the most. I guess it is up to the rest to fight for something better for everyone. Too bad there has been a "globalization of indifference ", as Pope Francis put it. Noone cares enough to lift a finger. It's pretty obvious the USA isolating itself will further intensify this truth. There are protests, but I mean really, what change are they making? If they get bigger, the felon will just squash them. I think the next president will likely be either Musk, or maybe Don jr. lol.

The China tariffs are real, good people! I purchased a scooter wheel with tire from AliExpress two weeks ago for $55. I've been playing the game of, "Will this make it to me this time?", because the 2 I ordered kept getting shipped back to the company with a full refund to me. I only ordered one last time, which may be why it made it to me. I was excited, so I went to order another last night and with the tariff, the price jumped to $127!!! $55 for the wheel with shipping, and $70 tariff. Of course, we knew this was coming, glad I ordered and received a bunch of China shit in anticipation of this, especially a new ebike I had my eye on. Check out their explanation under Additional charges, they ain't fuckin' around -

It's an addiction. No amount of money is enough, and they DON'T want to give up any of it. See Rump stiffing his Polish illegal immigrant workers of their wages. Contracts mean nothing.

Another thing to consider is that many of these Chinese companies are on TicTok and YT telling US consumers how to bypass the tariffs with creative shipping methods if you work with them directly. Not sure of the details, perhaps they ship to a Canadian or Mexican (or even Russian) warehouse, then ship it to the US. I'm going to try that for this second scooter wheel. I'll report back with any progress...

outside of tariffs aliexpress steals almost everything photo wise from small businesses and remakes their products at lower cost because of actual slave labor you shouldn't be buying from them , tarriff issues aside

the CBC found that aliexpress, shein, temu clothing all contain high levels of lead

aliexpress, shein, temu are all the same, i highly recommend not buying from them, if ripping off small businesses doesnt float your boat in terms of stopping the unethical labor standards, the killing of the environment , and dangerous materials inside them ..idk take your pick why not to support

I know that you have been burned by these Chinese companies that have stolen your designs to sell as their own. That really sux, Sunni. It happens everywhere, though, especially in the US. Large companies are consistently copying others work and flouting patent law because they can afford to. They make much more money by selling the stolen designs and paying the lawsuit (if they have to), than by following the law exactly. It sucks, but it is just the way big business works, regardless of the country of origin.
It is funny that they didn't list Amazon as a retailer in the article you posted, as most of its clothing comes from the same Chinese companies that is sold from the listed retailers. It is just common sense that when clothing is 5 or more times cheaper from an Asian country than a western country, they had to have cut corners to achieve this. Including utilizing cheaper, more dangerous chemicals. It is smart practice to wash any clothing items before wearing them, as the vast majority of these chemicals can be washed out. For non-clothing articles, the concern can be overblown. From your article -

Health Canada addressed the tote in an emailed statement, writing that the presence of phthalates doesn't always mean a risk. The regulator suggested that unless a toddler under age four is sucking on the purse for more than three hours on a daily basis, the purse is not a significant source of exposure to phthalates.

It is good to be cautious and informed, but a lot of the alarm makes for good headlines rather than educating the public on how to mitigate the effects of these chemicals. There are acceptable levels of toxins, plastics, animal hair and toxic chemicals even in the foods we consume, it is more about the level of said toxins than the absence of them. After all, even water is toxic to humans in excessive amounts. We all have the option of paying many times more for higher, safer quality items. Most of us choose to go the inexpensive route...

I'm fairly well-educated on this topic—over six years now in fact. If you choose to support these companies, that’s your decision. People will always find ways to rationalize their choices

It’s disappointing to have my understanding of this issue dismissed as alarmist. When we're confronted with ethical concerns like this, it's easy to downplay the evidence to justify our choices—especially if it helps us save money. You're certainly not alone in doing that, its what us small businesses and artists hear every single day.

but whatever im an alarmist or some shit

I'm not dismissing your world view, or your facts. I was simply attempting to put them into a wider context. Of course, we all know why pricing from these companies is so much cheaper - unfair labor practices, polluting the environment, etc.. Most of the time, we are not teaching anyone things that they were not aware of. People simply choose to opt for the cheaper pricing, while being well aware of the pitfalls and consequences of the production processes and policies. Some people choose to pay much more for products produced more ethically, and I think there is a certain virtue in that. I don't believe rationalization is necessary to make the choice, one can choose while fully accepting the reality of the situation. "My iphone and Nike shoes are one fifth the price they would be if produced ethically? I understand and I'm okay with that", is what the vast majority of people seem to be saying with their purchases. I say all this as a professional artist, and the owner of two small businesses.

I would very much like to subscribe to your newsletter, good sir. Your ideas fascinate me...

I've actually been a newsletter editor, printer, and mailer for a gun club whose membership included Peter DeFazio

Later, I became president of the club and invited him to speak at our monthly meeting, which he did and showed us his carry gun
