I started with some cfl's for the first couple of weeks then went to the HPS. I think you could use it all the way through though. You can get about 6-8 inches away from the plant with the 150 watt. Just keep a close eye on it because they can grow very fast. I would suggest topping the plant to get more cola's. read up on that.. it's worth it! good luck
