Same reason street lights are on 30ft poles. We use higher wattage bulbs to cover more area, not hit them harder. Hell at 50 watts per sq ft. all you need is a 50 watt floro if you are only lighting a square foot. You can have that 1 inch over the tops!

Even if you don't DIY, doing what we are doing, you should have a solid understanding of electricital wiring and proper guaging. A good household wiring book can give you that basic understanding for a few bucks and an extended session on the throne! Highly recommended.

Yes 18-24 is good on a 600. a 1k is a different animal. Spend a few bucks on a light meter and find the sweet spot that your hood works at. There will be a point that is has the best coverage.

With only 6 feet of height I think you would find things much easier to manage with lower wattage bulbs. 400 or 600 watt would be better suited. I'm getting great results from a 99.00 wal mart window mount air conditioner. I have it running in the room (both condensor and evaporator coils) and added a drain to the bottom. I need it to run 100% so I just crank up the cold to keepo it on.
